Namibian Businesses Seek Policy Clarity Ahead of President’s State of the Nation Address

Windhoek, Namibia – Business leaders are urging President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to provide clear policy direction in her upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) as companies grapple with economic pressures and regulatory uncertainty.

The Namibian Employers’ Federation (NEF) says businesses are struggling with sluggish growth, high unemployment, rising costs, and complex labor laws. President Nandi-Ndaitwah is set to deliver her address on Wednesday afternoon, and employers hope it will outline concrete steps to stabilize the economy.

Challenges Facing Businesses

NEF President Elia Shikongo highlighted several hurdles for Namibian businesses, including:

  • Weak economic growth limiting expansion opportunities
  • Persistent unemployment, particularly among youth
  • Rising operational costs due to inflation and compliance burdens
  • Regulatory uncertainty from recent labor law amendments

“Employers are committed to compliance and job creation, but the current environment makes it difficult to sustain and expand employment,” Shikongo said.

Calls for Policy Clarity

The NEF has raised concerns over recent labor reforms, including updates to the Labour Act, the rollout of a national minimum wage, and the role of the Employment Equity Commission. While supportive of worker protections, the federation argues that policies must also consider business sustainability.

Shikongo emphasized the need for balanced regulations that protect workers without stifling job creation. “We hope the president’s address will provide clarity on how the government plans to support businesses while addressing unemployment,” he said.

Key Recommendations

The NEF has proposed several measures to foster economic stability:

  • Decentralizing government offices to improve efficiency
  • Tailoring policies to fit both urban and rural business realities
  • Strengthening consultation between government, employers, and workers

“Sustainable jobs depend on sustainable businesses,” Shikongo said. “A predictable, consultative approach is crucial for long-term economic stability.”

As Namibia awaits the president’s address, businesses remain hopeful for policies that encourage growth while safeguarding jobs.
