Great Lakes Mall in Ohio Faces Uncertain Future as Owner Washington Prime Group Plans Massive Property Sale
MENTOR, Ohio — The Great Lakes Mall, a retail cornerstone in northeast Ohio, could soon have new owners as its parent company prepares to sell off its entire portfolio of more than 70 properties.
City officials in Mentor confirmed the pending sale by Washington Prime Group (WPG), though details on timing and potential buyers remain unclear. The mall, spanning 1.25 million square feet, draws roughly 5.2 million visitors annually, making it one of the region’s busiest shopping destinations.
In a statement, Mentor leaders expressed confidence in the mall’s long-term viability, pledging to support efforts to attract new investment and diversify its offerings. “The Great Lakes Mall remains a vital retail hub for our community,” the city said. “We’re committed to working with stakeholders to ensure its continued success.”
A Shifting Retail Landscape
WPG’s decision to sell follows a year of significant downsizing. The company has already offloaded about half of its properties and is now marketing the rest, including Great Lakes Mall. The move comes as traditional malls nationwide grapple with declining foot traffic and the rise of e-commerce.
Despite these challenges, Great Lakes Mall maintains steady visitor numbers. Data shows shoppers average 7.15 visits per year, spending about 65 minutes per trip. The property’s size and location—just northeast of Cleveland—make it a key economic driver for Lake County.
Job Cuts and Employee Support
The corporate restructuring has also led to layoffs, with WPG reducing its workforce to align with its shrinking portfolio. Affected employees will receive severance packages, career transition services, and access to a professional development program launched last summer.
The program offers resume workshops, job search assistance, and even professional headshots to help workers transition to new roles. Some employees can also pursue certifications or degrees to boost their qualifications.
A WPG spokesperson said the strategy has been communicated internally for months, with the company providing resources to ease the transition. “Our focus is on supporting our team members during this period of change,” the spokesperson said.
What’s Next for Great Lakes Mall?
While the sale process unfolds, Mentor officials say they’re exploring ways to revitalize the mall and surrounding area. Potential redevelopment could include mixed-use projects, adding residential or entertainment spaces to complement traditional retail.
For now, shoppers and employees are left waiting for updates. The mall remains open, but its future hinges on who steps forward as a buyer—and whether they share the city’s vision for its next chapter.
