The long road to Osun government house started with late Isiaka Adeleke, the first executive governor of the state whose tenure was put paid to in 1993 having been elected a year before under the Social democratic party. Since the return of democracy in 1999, Isiaka Adeleke had his eyes fixed on the goal to becoming the state governor once again. Serubawon as fondly called was elected senator for Osun west under the PDP between 2007 and 2011.
Adeleke angrily left the pdp having lost the gubernatorial ticket in 2014 and pitched his tent with then Governor Rauf Aregbesola who was seeking re-election. Adeleke later got reelected on the platform of the APC in 2015 where he nursed the ambition of contesting for the governorship race in 2018.
The death of Isiaka Adeleke in 2017 and the circumstances surrounding it made his wish of becoming Osun state governor a family project.
This also gave rise to a hitherto unknown Ademola Adeleke who contested under the All-progressives congress in the 2017 Osun west senatorial by-election to finish the term of his elder brother in the senate. In 2018, senator Ademola Adeleke defected to the peoples democratic party to contest the governorship election. There and then, the battle began.
Ademola Adeleke like his late brother Isiaka faced political grilling as he lost the 2018 governorshipo election with 353 votes after run-off. Enmeshed in internal battle, the soul of the pdp in the state was wrestled for before Adeleke got the ticket again in 2022. In all of this, the family, starting from the matriarch Modupe Adeleke to the business mogul and elder brother Deji Adeleke who was fingered to have bankrolled the exploits of Ademola, to the governor’s cousin David Adeleke AKA Davido, all stood and fought tooth and nail in bringing the wish of Late Adetunji Adeleke to fruition.
Now that the struggle has culminated to a resounding political success, the people of Osun are eagerly waiting to see how the PDP govt led by Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke will fair even now that the opposition APC is trying to settle its internal rancor and position itself ahead the 2026 governorship poll.
For now, it is easy to say that the Adeleke family have finally proven the saying that it’s family above every other thing.
