Stomach ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers, can cause burning pain, bloating, heartburn, and even nausea. Whether caused by stress, bacteria (H. pylori), or excessive use of painkillers, ulcers can make life miserable. But the good news is: you can start healing within a few days with the right combination of food, lifestyle changes, and treatment.

This guide shows you how to relieve ulcer pain fast, what to eat, and when to see a doctor.

1. Start With Medical Diagnosis
Before anything else, visit a doctor or pharmacy to confirm whether you have an ulcer. A simple test can detect if it’s caused by H. pylori bacteria, which requires antibiotics.

Fast-action medications include:
Antacids (e.g., Gestid, Mylanta)
Proton pump inhibitors (e.g., Omeprazole, Esomeprazole)
Antibiotics (if H. pylori is confirmed)
Do not self-medicate without guidance.

2. Eat These Soothing Foods
Your stomach lining needs healing, and the best way is through ulcer-friendly foods that neutralize acid and reduce irritation.

Best ulcer foods for quick relief:
Unripe plantain (boiled or blended)
Pap (akamu/ogi) with honey
Banana and watermelon smoothies
Cabbage juice (blend and drink fresh)
Oats and soft rice meals
Natural yoghurt (unsweetened)
These foods soothe the stomach lining and promote faster healing.

3. Avoid These Immediately
If you want to heal quickly, cut out anything that worsens your ulcer, such as:
Peppery/spicy foods
Fried and oily foods
Alcohol and smoking
Coffee and strong tea
Painkillers (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or diclofenac.

4. Use Natural Remedies with Caution
Many Nigerians use herbs and local remedies, and some can help. But only stick to safe and proven ones.
Effective home remedies:
Cabbage juice (1 glass twice daily)
Honey + warm water on an empty stomach
Banana + papaya smoothie
Note: Avoid bitter leaf, garlic, or ginger in excess, they can irritate the ulcer more.

5. Reduce Stress – It Slows Healing
Stress increases acid production and delays healing. Try:
Sleeping at least 6–8 hours daily
Reducing worry and mental pressure
Practicing breathing exercises or gentle yoga
Listening to calming music
Ulcers are worsened by worry, calm your mind, and your gut will follow.

6. When to See a Doctor Urgently
Go to the hospital immediately if you experience:

Vomiting blood or coffee-colored substance
Black or tarry stool
Sudden sharp abdominal pain
Loss of appetite or rapid weight loss
These are signs of bleeding or perforated ulcer and can be life-threatening.

Meanwhile, you may not completely cure an ulcer in 2–3 days, but you can get significant relief with proper food, medication, and rest. Combine a soothing diet, medical treatment, and stress control to start healing fast.

Ulcers are treatable; don’t suffer in silence. Get help early and stay consistent with your recovery routine.
