Minnesota United FC Edges Out Cincinnati FC with 1-0 Victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. – In a tightly contested match on Saturday night, Minnesota United FC secured a narrow 1-0 victory over FC Cincinnati, powered by a crucial rebound goal from Kelvin Yeboah and stellar goalkeeping from Drake Callender. This win marks a significant turnaround for Minnesota after their previous defeat in the season opener.

The match unfolded under frigid conditions, with temperatures at kickoff dipping to 20 degrees Fahrenheit — a record low for FC Cincinnati’s matches in Major League Soccer (MLS). Despite the cold, both teams displayed tenacity as they sought to establish dominance early in the game.

Cincinnati pressed hard, earning five corner kicks within the first 25 minutes, showcasing their offensive strategy. However, Minnesota’s defense remained resilient, holding steadfast against the early onslaught.

As the game approached the 66th minute, the tide began to turn in favor of the home team. A free kick awarded just outside the 18-yard box sparked a chain of events that would shift the game’s momentum. Tomás Chancalay’s expertly taken set piece ricocheted off a wall of Cincinnati defenders before striking the right post. Yeboah, quick to react, followed the shot and made a stunning header, sending the ball past Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano for the decisive goal.

“Every match counts in this league, and coming back to win at home is critical for our confidence,” Yeboah said after the match, emphasizing the importance of team effort and resilience.

Goalkeeper Drake Callender played a pivotal role in preserving Minnesota’s lead, making several key saves throughout the contest. His most remarkable save occurred in the 71st minute when he leaped to deny an ambitious shot from Cincinnati’s Obinna Nwobodo. This clutch performance helped solidify Callender’s status as a reliable last line of defense for the team.

“I just do my job and try to keep the team in it,” Callender stated modestly after the game. “We’re still building chemistry, but tonight felt great.”

Despite a strong defensive display from Minnesota, Cincinnati’s Roman Celentano also proved formidable, making four saves of his own to keep his team in contention. Two of those saves came in the early moments of the second half, highlighting his agility and skill under pressure.

The match was not without its interruptions. A head injury to Cincinnati captain Michael Boxall led to an extensive delay, resulting in 11 added minutes of play. Boxall was replaced by Devin Padelford as the match progressed into its closing stages, forcing Cincinnati to adapt on the fly.

Meanwhile, Minnesota remained without notable players, including former 2025 MLS MVP Evander, who was ruled out due to a hamstring injury sustained in the opener against Atlanta. Fans eagerly awaited the debut of Minnesota’s star acquisition, Colombian international James Rodríguez, currently sidelined and yet to step onto the pitch this season.

This victory has propelled Minnesota United FC to a record of 1-1-0, accumulating four points in the early stages of the season. In contrast, Cincinnati now sits at 1-0-1 with three points, reflecting the competitiveness of the league as teams jockey for early-season positioning.

Looking ahead, Cincinnati will host Toronto FC next Sunday, seeking to bounce back and regain momentum. Minnesota, meanwhile, will travel to face Nashville SC next Saturday, looking to capitalize on this hard-fought victory and continue building their chemistry on the pitch.

As the MLS season progresses, the implications of this match extend beyond just points on the table. With teams establishing their forms, every goal, every save, and every match will influence playoff strategies and fan engagement as the fight for championship glory intensifies. The resilience exhibited by both teams speaks volumes about their potential to contend as the season unfolds, drawing fans’ attention and setting the stage for thrilling encounters ahead.
