Akron Unveils Transformative Innerbelt Master Plan to Reconnect Neighborhoods

AKRON, Ohio — The City of Akron has officially completed its Akron Innerbelt Master Plan, a major urban revitalization initiative designed to reconnect neighborhoods, spur economic growth, and transform underutilized land. The finalized plan, now available for public review on the project website, outlines a bold vision for the city’s future.

A Year in the Making: Community-Driven Vision

Developed over the past year through extensive community engagement and stakeholder collaboration, the plan reflects the priorities of Akron residents. It proposes more than 30 projects centered around five key strategies:

  1. Investing in neighborhoods – Strengthening local communities with housing and services.
  2. Improving east-west corridors – Enhancing connectivity across the city.
  3. Connecting open spaces – Creating greenways and pedestrian-friendly zones.
  4. Activating Innerbelt-adjacent assets – Revitalizing nearby landmarks.
  5. Unlocking land under the Innerbelt – Repurposing vacant or underused areas.

Next Steps: Approval and Funding

The plan will be presented at the April commission meeting before moving to Akron City Council for final adoption. The city has already allocated $500,000 this year to kickstart implementation, with initial efforts focusing on:

  • Zoning code updates for Innerbelt-adjacent areas.
  • Beautification of decommissioned sections.
  • Infill housing development on vacant lots.

Additionally, Akron is awaiting guidance on a $10 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, which could accelerate progress.

Mayor Malik: “A Turning Point for Akron”

Mayor Shammas Malik hailed the plan as a “critical step” toward reshaping Akron’s urban landscape.

“The Innerbelt has long been both a challenge and an opportunity,” Malik said. “This plan reflects the voices of our residents and sets the stage for reconnecting neighborhoods, fostering economic growth, and building a more vibrant Akron.”

With strong community backing and strategic investments, the Innerbelt Master Plan could redefine Akron’s future—bridging divides and unlocking new potential for generations to come.
