In a statement issued on Monday, Senator Thomas described the attack as “criminal, barbaric, and a gross violation of human dignity.” He emphasized the need for stronger protections for women’s rights and urged law enforcement to ensure accountability.

The Senator made the remarks after visiting His Royal Majesty, Anthony Ogbogbo Ibuka I, the Ovie of Ozoro Kingdom, at his palace. He clarified that the festival, traditionally a peaceful cultural event, was disrupted by criminal elements who committed the assaults.

“No Such Thing as a ‘Rape Festival'” – Senator Rejects Misrepresentation

“As an Isoko man, I am deeply pained by the misrepresentation of our people and traditions,” Senator Thomas stated. “Let me be clear: there is no such thing as a ‘rape festival’ in Ozoro Kingdom or anywhere in Isoko land. Our culture is built on peace, respect, and the protection of dignity—especially for women.”

He stressed that the incident was not reflective of Isoko heritage but rather the actions of a few criminals. The Senator commended the swift response of local leaders, vigilante groups, and the Nigeria Police Force in rescuing victims and restoring order.

Calls for Thorough Investigation and Preventive Measures

Senator Thomas urged authorities to conduct a transparent investigation, insisting that justice must be served without bias. He also called on community leaders and cultural custodians to enforce stricter safety measures during public events to prevent future occurrences.

“All forms of sexual assault, harassment, and violence against women are completely unacceptable,” he said. “Our traditions forbid such behavior, and no woman or girl should ever endure this kind of humiliation.”

Appeal for Calm and Commitment to Justice

The Senator appealed for calm among residents of Ozoro Kingdom and Isoko land, assuring them of his commitment to working with stakeholders and security agencies to ensure justice and prevent similar incidents.

“Together, we will uphold the values that make Ozoro a beacon of peace, culture, and progress,” he concluded.

The case has drawn national attention, with activists and human rights groups demanding stronger legal protections for women in Nigeria. Authorities are expected to provide updates on the investigation in the coming days.
