Boston Red Sox Shut Out Cincinnati Reds 3-0 in Opening Day Victory

CINCINNATI — The Boston Red Sox kicked off their 2025 MLB season in style, blanking the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 on Opening Day at Great American Ball Park. The victory marked Boston’s first Opening Day shutout since 2015 and showcased stellar pitching and timely hitting.

Left-handed starter Garrett Crochet led the charge for the Red Sox, delivering a masterful six-inning performance. Crochet allowed just three hits while striking out six and walking two. His ability to escape a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning proved pivotal, as he retired Eugenio Suárez and Spencer Steer to maintain the shutout.

“Crochet was incredible today,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “He stayed composed under pressure and gave us exactly what we needed to start the season strong.”

Crochet’s counterpart, Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott, also turned in a solid outing, matching Crochet with six scoreless innings. However, Cincinnati’s offense struggled to find rhythm, managing just four hits throughout the game. Rookie first baseman Sal Stewart was a bright spot for the Reds, collecting three hits, including two doubles.

The game remained scoreless until the seventh inning, when Boston broke through with a clutch RBI single from Ceddanne Rafaela. Pinch-hitter Marcelo Mayer ignited the rally with a double to deep left-center, narrowly missing Reds center fielder TJ Friedl’s outstretched glove. Mayer advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Rafaela’s well-placed hit.

“The seventh inning was crucial,” Rafaela said after the game. “I was just trying to stay calm and put the ball in play. It felt great to come through for the team.”

The Red Sox added two insurance runs in the ninth inning, with Trevor Story and Jarren Duran delivering RBI singles to extend the lead. Former Reds closer Aroldis Chapman sealed the win with a perfect ninth inning, earning the save.

For Cincinnati, the loss marked their ninth Opening Day shutout in franchise history and their first since 2018. The Reds’ inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities, particularly in the sixth inning, left manager David Bell frustrated.

“We had a chance to break through, but Crochet made the pitches when it mattered,” Bell said. “We’ll regroup and come back stronger tomorrow.”

The Red Sox’s victory also marked their 11th Opening Day shutout, with 10 of those coming on the road. Roman Anthony contributed three hits, while Rafaela finished 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI.

Looking ahead, the Red Sox will send right-hander Sonny Gray to the mound for Game 2 of the series. Gray, who posted a 14-8 record with a 4.28 ERA last season, will face Reds right-hander Brady Singer, who went 14-12 with a 4.03 ERA in 2025.

As the teams prepare for their next matchup, Boston’s Opening Day triumph serves as a promising start to their campaign. For Cincinnati, it’s a reminder of the work ahead as they aim to bounce back in the series.
