Luke Raley Powers Seattle Mariners to First Win of the Season Against Cleveland Guardians
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners secured their first victory of the 2024 MLB season on Friday night, defeating the Cleveland Guardians 5-1 at T-Mobile Park. Luke Raley, whose performance has been a bright spot for the Mariners early in the season, delivered a clutch home run to help seal the win.
Raley, who struggled with injuries last season and managed just four home runs, showcased his growing confidence at the plate. In the seventh inning, he crushed a 390-foot two-run homer off Guardians reliever Colin Holderman. The blast, a belt-high cutter, extended the Mariners’ lead to 5-1 and energized the home crowd.
“It felt great to contribute like that,” Raley said after the game. “I’ve been working hard to bounce back, and tonight was a good step forward.”
Seattle’s offense came alive in the fourth inning when second baseman Cole Young launched a three-run homer to right-center field off Guardians starter Gavin Williams. Young’s shot, his first of the season, gave the Mariners an early lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The Guardians, who opened the series with a 6-4 win on Thursday, had a promising start Friday thanks to rookie Chase DeLauter. The top prospect continued his impressive debut by hitting a solo home run in the first inning off Mariners starter George Kirby. DeLauter’s 360-foot blast marked his third homer in just two games, making him the third player since 1900 to achieve that feat.
“Chase is proving he belongs here,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “He’s been a spark for us.”
Despite DeLauter’s early heroics, Cleveland struggled to generate offense against Kirby, who turned in a dominant performance. The Mariners’ right-hander allowed just two hits over six innings, striking out six and walking two. Kirby’s poise was on full display in the fifth inning when he escaped a bases-loaded jam, thanks to a stellar defensive play by Randy Arozarena. The outfielder threw out Rhys Hoskins at home plate on a shallow fly ball, preserving Seattle’s lead.
The Guardians’ bullpen couldn’t contain the Mariners’ offense, with Holderman surrendering Raley’s decisive home run. Seattle’s pitching and timely hitting proved too much for Cleveland, which now looks to rebound in the third game of the four-game series.
Up next, Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo will face Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo on Saturday. Both teams are eager to build momentum as the season unfolds.
For the Mariners, Friday’s win was a confidence booster after dropping their season opener. For Raley, it was a reminder of his potential to impact games in big ways.
“We’re just getting started,” Raley said. “This team has a lot of fight, and tonight showed what we’re capable of.”
