Cincinnati Bengals and Hamilton County Finalize $185 Million Stadium Upgrade Deal
CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals and Hamilton County have struck a preliminary agreement to inject $185 million into upgrades for Paycor Stadium, aiming to modernize the venue by the 2026 NFL season. The deal marks a significant step in ongoing negotiations to secure the Bengals’ long-term future in Cincinnati.
Hamilton County commissioners are set to vote on the agreement on April 29, following discussions initiated during a county commission meeting on Tuesday. The memorandum of understanding, finalized Monday night, outlines plans for extensive renovations to enhance the stadium’s amenities and infrastructure.
Paycor Stadium, which has been the Bengals’ home since its opening in 2000, is slated to receive upgrades to club lounges, stadium suites, and concession areas as part of the first phase of improvements. The Bengals will contribute $120 million toward these updates, with part of the funding sourced through a loan under the NFL’s G-5 program. Meanwhile, Hamilton County will allocate $64.5 million to address critical upgrades, including escalators, elevators, electrical systems, glass refurbishment, and the stadium’s scoreboard control room.
The agreement also sets the stage for broader negotiations on a new lease and a potential $830 million renovation plan. Both parties face a June 30 deadline to decide whether to extend the current lease or approve the first of five two-year lease extensions. The Bengals’ original lease is set to expire on June 30, 2026.
Bengals Executive Vice President Katie Blackburn emphasized the importance of reaching a mutually beneficial arrangement during recent NFL meetings. “We could, I guess, go wherever we wanted after this year if we didn’t pick up the option,” Blackburn told reporters. “We are having discussions, and we’re hopeful that the county is thinking about it a lot too and wants to get it addressed in a way that would be beneficial to both of us.”
Hamilton County has also sought $350 million in funding from the state of Ohio to support stadium improvements. The request comes as Ohio lawmakers weigh competing priorities, including a separate proposal to fund the construction of a new domed stadium for the Cleveland Browns in Brook Park, roughly 15 miles south of Cleveland.
For Bengals fans, the proposed upgrades are a welcome development, ensuring the team remains in Cincinnati while modernizing the 24-year-old stadium. Paycor Stadium, originally named Paul Brown Stadium, underwent a rebranding in August 2022 when the team sold its naming rights to Paycor, a Cincinnati-based payroll and HR software company.
As negotiations continue, stakeholders are optimistic that the deal will bolster the Bengals’ home advantage while providing Hamilton County with a state-of-the-art venue for football and other events.
The April 29 vote will be a critical milestone in securing the future of one of Cincinnati’s most iconic sports landmarks.
