Runway Expands Beyond AI Video, Betting Big on the Future of “Video Intelligence”

Runway, the AI video generation startup that has revolutionized film, advertising, and digital content creation, is making a bold leap beyond its core business. The company has announced a $10 million venture fund aimed at nurturing early-stage startups working at the intersection of AI, media, and world simulation. The move signals Runway’s ambition to foster an ecosystem around what it calls “video intelligence”—a next-generation paradigm where AI-powered video becomes interactive, immersive, and deeply integrated into industries far beyond entertainment.

The fund, backed by existing investors and partners, will offer seed to Series C startups up to $500,000 in funding, alongside free API credits through Runway’s newly launched Builders Program. The initiative is designed to accelerate innovation in AI-driven applications, from real-time video agents to synthetic media tools, as Runway positions itself not just as a toolmaker but as a catalyst for the next wave of AI adoption.

From Creative Tools to a Broader AI Ecosystem

Runway has already established itself as a leader in AI-generated video, with its technology used by filmmakers, marketers, and digital creators worldwide. However, the company’s December 2025 launch of “general world models” marked a strategic shift—expanding from creative applications to broader, real-world use cases. Now, Runway is doubling down on this vision by investing in startups that can push the boundaries of what AI-powered video can achieve.

“We believe video intelligence will unlock a new set of applications across industries—ones we can’t pursue alone but can support through partnerships,” said Alejandro Matamala Ortiz, Runway’s co-founder and chief design officer, in an interview with TechCrunch.

The fund will focus on three key areas:

  1. Cutting-Edge AI Research – Startups developing novel AI architectures and pushing the limits of generative video.
  2. Application-Layer Innovation – Companies building practical tools on top of foundation models, bringing AI to new sectors like healthcare, education, and enterprise.
  3. Next-Gen Media & Storytelling – Creators experimenting with AI-driven narratives, interactive characters, and immersive experiences.

Already, Runway has quietly backed several promising ventures, including LanceDB, a database infrastructure firm for AI applications, and Tamarind Bio, which leverages AI for protein design in drug discovery. Another portfolio company, Cartesia, specializes in real-time audio generation—a complementary technology to Runway’s video models.

The Rise of AI Venture Funds

Runway is not alone in its venture ambitions. The AI industry has seen a surge in corporate-backed investment arms, with OpenAI’s Startup Fund and Perplexity’s $50 million seed-stage fund leading the charge. Even cloud computing giant CoreWeave launched its own AI-focused venture arm last year.

For Runway, which has raised $860 million from backers like Nvidia and Qatar Investment Authority (valuing the company at $5.3 billion), the fund represents a strategic bet on the future of AI. “We see immense potential in partnering with early-stage teams that can explore use cases we can’t,” Ortiz explained.

Introducing “Characters”: AI Agents That Come to Life

A key driver of Runway’s new initiative is Characters, its recently launched API that enables real-time, interactive AI agents with photorealistic or stylized avatars. The technology allows developers to create dynamic, conversational AI entities—ranging from virtual customer service reps to personalized onboarding assistants.

The Builders Program will provide select startups with 500,000 API credits to experiment with Characters, offering a glimpse into how AI-driven video agents could reshape industries. Early adopters include Cartesia, MSCHF, and Oasys Health, which are already deploying the tech for applications in telemedicine, marketing, and synthetic media.

“We’re entering an era where AI can simulate entire environments, and users can engage in real-time conversations with digital characters,” Ortiz said. “This isn’t just about chatbots—it’s about creating immersive, interactive worlds.”

Runway’s vision aligns with a broader trend in AI, where companies like Inworld, Charisma, and Character AI are pioneering lifelike digital personas for gaming, storytelling, and customer engagement. Meanwhile, startups like StoReel are experimenting with AI-generated micro-dramas, hinting at a future where entertainment is not just consumed but actively shaped by viewers.

The Road Ahead: A More Immersive, AI-Driven Internet

As Runway expands its footprint beyond video generation, the company envisions a future where AI-powered interactions redefine digital experiences. “We believe the next internet will be more personalized, more immersive, and more real-time,” Ortiz said.

With its venture fund and Builders Program, Runway is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation—betting that the next wave of AI innovation will be built not just on text or images, but on the dynamic, ever-evolving medium of video.

Whether that future unfolds as envisioned remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Runway is no longer just a tool for creators—it’s shaping the infrastructure of tomorrow’s AI-powered world.
