Free Election Day Rides: Lake & Geauga Counties Offer Public Transit for Voters

Laketran and Geauga Transit Provide No-Cost Transportation to Polls on May 5 Primary
Residents of Lake and Geauga Counties in Ohio won’t have to worry about transportation barriers when heading to the polls for the May 5 primary election. Both Laketran and Geauga Transit are offering free rides on public transit services to ensure every voter can cast their ballot without hassle.
How It Works
Laketran will waive fares for all Local Routes and Dial-a-Ride services on Election Day. Passengers simply need to inform the driver they’re traveling to or from a polling location to secure their free ride.
For those requiring door-to-door assistance, Dial-a-Ride reservations must be booked in advance—anywhere from one to 12 business days before Election Day—by calling 440-350-1000. Geauga Transit is also participating, extending the same courtesy to its Dial-a-Ride users.
Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., giving voters ample time to participate in the democratic process.
Removing Barriers to Voting
Ben Capelle, CEO of Laketran, emphasized the importance of accessible voting: “Access to the ballot is fundamental, and transportation should never be a barrier to participating in our democratic process. By offering free rides for both early voting and Election Day, we’re helping ensure every resident has a convenient and reliable way to make their voice heard.”
The initiative aims to support voters who may otherwise struggle with transportation, including seniors, low-income residents, and those without personal vehicles.
Why This Matters
Voter turnout often hinges on accessibility, and public transit plays a crucial role in ensuring equitable participation. Similar programs in other states have successfully increased voter engagement, particularly in underserved communities.
With early voting already underway, election officials encourage residents to plan ahead. Checking polling locations and transit schedules in advance can help avoid last-minute delays.
Looking Ahead
As Election Day approaches, local leaders hope the free transit option will boost civic engagement. For voters needing assistance, Laketran and Geauga Transit representatives are available to answer questions and help coordinate rides.
