Ohio Launches 250-Mile Hiking Challenge to Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday
Outdoor enthusiasts in Ohio now have a unique way to celebrate the nation’s semiquincentennial—by hitting the trails.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has unveiled a special hiking challenge to mark America’s 250th anniversary. Running through December 31, the initiative invites residents and visitors to explore the state’s scenic landscapes while commemorating the historic milestone.
Two Challenges, One Goal: Get Outdoors
Participants can choose between two hiking goals: a family-friendly 25-mile trek or a more ambitious 250-mile adventure. Both options feature trails across Ohio’s state parks, nature preserves, and wildlife areas, offering hikers a chance to discover the state’s diverse natural beauty.
“Ohio is home to breathtaking outdoor spaces, and this challenge is a fantastic way for families, friends, and solo adventurers to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday while enjoying our incredible trails,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “Every mile tells a story—whether it’s about our land, our history, or the people who cherish it.”
Rewards for the Journey
Those who complete the 25-mile challenge will earn a digital badge and a limited-edition sticker. Meanwhile, the first 250 hikers to finish the 250-mile challenge will receive a commemorative coin, adding extra motivation for those seeking a bigger adventure.
How to Participate
Registration is open now, and hikers have until December 31, 2024, to log their miles. The ODNR will contact eligible participants via email to distribute prizes.
