Oneil Cruz Powers Pittsburgh Pirates to 8-3 Victory Over Cincinnati Reds
CINCINNATI — Oneil Cruz continued his explosive form at the plate, smashing a three-run homer to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. The victory secured a series win for the Pirates in the three-game matchup at Great American Ball Park.
Cruz, who has been a standout performer in Cincinnati, launched his third home run in just two games. The towering 407-foot shot in the first inning set the tone for Pittsburgh’s offense. Cruz finished the series 5 for 13 with three homers and six RBIs, further cementing his reputation as a Reds’ nemesis.
“It’s always a great feeling to contribute like this,” Cruz said after the game. “I’m just trying to stay consistent and help the team win.”
Pirates’ ace Paul Skenes bounced back emphatically after a rough outing in his season debut. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner delivered a solid five-inning performance, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five. His outing ended what had been a 31-inning scoreless streak for the Reds against him.
“Paul was outstanding today,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “He showed why he’s one of the best in the game.”
The Reds’ lone run against Skenes came in the fourth inning when Nathaniel Lowe drove in Elly De La Cruz with a double to right-center. However, the Pirates quickly responded, extending their lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Spencer Horwitz.
Cincinnati attempted to rally in the bottom of the sixth when Eugenio Suárez came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit, two-run homer, his second of the season. But the Pirates slammed the door shut in the ninth inning with Bryan Reynolds’ two-run blast and Nick Gonzales’ two-run double, sealing the decisive win.
Reds starter Andrew Abbott struggled early, surrendering Cruz’s three-run homer in the first inning. Abbott (0-1) went five innings, giving up three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out seven.
The Pirates’ bullpen held firm after Skenes exited, allowing just two hits over the final four innings. Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s offense couldn’t capitalize on opportunities, stranding several runners in scoring position.
With the win, Pittsburgh improved to 3-3 on the young season, while Cincinnati dropped to 2-4. The Pirates will now return home for their opener against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, with right-hander Mitch Keller slated to take the mound.
The Reds, meanwhile, embark on a seven-game road trip, starting with a series against the Texas Rangers. Right-hander Brady Singer is expected to make his second start of the season for Cincinnati.
As the Pirates celebrate their strong finish in Cincinnati, all eyes remain on Oneil Cruz, whose power-hitting prowess continues to captivate fans and opponents alike.
