FCT Residents Urge Wike to Fast-Track Operations at Completed Bus Terminals

Abuja, Nigeria – Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are calling on Minister Nyesom Wike to expedite the launch of newly constructed bus and taxi terminals designed to ease transportation challenges in Abuja.

Despite being completed months ago, terminals in Kugbo, Mabushi, and the Central Business District remain inactive, leaving commuters frustrated and worsening traffic congestion.

Frustration Over Delayed Operations

Audu Ali, a resident of Nyanya, expressed disappointment over the stalled Kugbo Bus Terminal. “We were excited when the project was completed, hoping it would reduce our daily transport struggles. But nothing has happened since,” he said.

Grace Danjuma, a commuter working in the city center, echoed his concerns, stating that the delay has intensified hardships for workers in satellite towns. “Every day is a struggle with overcrowded buses and long queues. These terminals should have been operational by now,” she said.

Commercial drivers also see the terminals as a potential solution to chaotic transport operations. Sani Mohammed, a driver, believes the facilities will improve safety and efficiency. “Proper loading points will reduce harassment from touts and make movement more organized,” he said.

Business Hopes and Government Assurance

Local traders, like Ngozi Eze from Karu, anticipate economic benefits once the terminals open. “More organized transport means more customers. This will boost businesses around the area,” she said.

Minister Wike recently assured residents that operations would begin soon after receiving approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC). Following an inspection of ongoing projects, including the Mabushi Bus Terminal access road, he confirmed that President Bola Tinubu and the FEC had greenlit the terminals’ management under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

“The terminals were completed and inaugurated in 2025, but we needed higher-level approvals to proceed. Now that FEC has approved the management, processes are being finalized for operations to start,” Wike explained.

What’s Next?

With bureaucratic hurdles cleared, residents hope for swift action. The terminals promise to streamline transport, reduce congestion, and stimulate local commerce—delivering much-needed relief to Abuja’s commuters.
