Polokwane, South Africa – A deadly collision on the N1 outside Polokwane has left two dead and one injured, authorities confirmed Thursday. The accident comes as traffic volumes surge ahead of the Easter weekend, prompting warnings from Gauteng Traffic Police.

Motorists traveling from Gauteng are advised to use the Nyl Toll Plaza off-ramp and divert via the R101 to avoid congestion. Traffic spokesperson Mashudu Mabata urged drivers to exercise caution, particularly with increased holiday travel.

Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane announced intensified operations across the province, targeting overloaded vehicles and reckless driving. “We will be visible on high-traffic routes to ensure compliance,” Maremane said.

Police Raid Home of Controversial Sergeant

In a separate development, police executed a search warrant at the home of Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, a figure linked to alleged corruption. Nkosi, previously accused of lying under oath during the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, is suspected of facilitating dealings between crime bosses and government officials.

The raid follows the arrest of 12 senior police officers tied to a multi-million rand tender scandal involving alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. The commission has flagged Nkosi for further investigation.

Zuma Challenges Judge Khampepe in Constitutional Court

Meanwhile, former President Jacob Zuma has filed an urgent application with South Africa’s Constitutional Court, seeking to overturn a High Court ruling that upheld Judge Sisi Khampepe’s role in the TRC Cases Inquiry.

Zuma argues the inquiry’s May deadline and pending compliance orders could expose him to contempt charges. His legal team contends Judge Khampepe should recuse herself due to her prior involvement in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and as Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions.

The High Court previously dismissed Zuma and former President Thabo Mbeki’s bid to remove Khampepe, citing insufficient evidence of bias.

Road Safety Reminder:
With Easter travel underway, authorities urge motorists to adhere to speed limits, avoid overloading, and take frequent breaks to prevent fatigue-related accidents.
