Ohio Family’s Weighted Blankets Offer Comfort and Community for Autism Families

HARTVILLE, Ohio — Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) now affects 1 in 31 children, according to the National Autism Association. With 40% of those children being nonverbal, families across the country are seeking ways to navigate the challenges and celebrate the unique strengths of their loved ones. For Cara and Dan Burnham of Hartville, Ohio, their journey with autism inspired a heartfelt mission: crafting weighted blankets to help others facing similar challenges.

Their son Rowan, now 13, was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. While Rowan was verbal and met many developmental milestones early—he learned to read at just two years old—other aspects, like fine motor skills and eye contact, were delayed. “We knew something was different,” Cara Burnham recalled. “But we also saw his incredible potential.”

ASD is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain, impacting how individuals communicate, interact, and learn. Because autism is a spectrum, its effects vary widely from person to person. For the Burnhams, understanding Rowan’s diagnosis became a stepping stone to creating something meaningful for the autism community.

In March 2025, Cara launched Sensational Sewing Studio LLC, a business that combines her background in fashion design with her family’s firsthand experience with autism. The studio specializes in handmade weighted blankets, designed to provide deep pressure stimulation—a therapeutic technique known to reduce anxiety and improve focus.

Weighted blankets, often filled with millions of tiny beads distributed across dozens of pockets, mimic the calming sensation of a hug. Studies from institutions like the Cleveland Clinic have shown that this tactile stimulation can soothe the nervous system, making the blankets particularly beneficial for individuals with autism, ADHD, and anxiety.

“The autism and ADHD communities have found them incredibly helpful, especially our portable versions,” Cara explained. “They can be worn in classrooms or used at home, offering comfort wherever it’s needed.”

The Burnhams’ blankets are fully customizable, tailored to each client’s needs in terms of size and weight. For Rowan, who has used weighted blankets for years, they remain a source of comfort. “When I’m stressed out, I pull one up and snuggle,” he shared.

What started as a business venture has become a family affair. Rowan and his sister Eve often help with the blanket-making process, transforming it into a shared activity that strengthens their bond. The blankets are sold online, at pop-up events, and at the Sensational Sewing Studio LLC sensory store in Hartville.

Beyond providing a practical tool, the Burnhams’ venture has connected them with families on similar journeys. “It’s been a way for us to build community and offer support,” Cara said. “We understand the highs and lows, and we want to be there for others.”

The studio also offers sewing classes for children and adults, fostering creativity and skill-building. For Cara, raising awareness and promoting acceptance of autism is a lifelong mission. “We need to recognize the whole person—their abilities, gifts, and potential,” she emphasized.

The Burnhams continue to advocate for Rowan and the broader autism community, turning their daily experiences into a force for positive change. Their weighted blankets are more than just products; they’re symbols of hope, connection, and understanding.
