Bandits Kill Police Officer, Burn Health Center in Fresh Katsina State Attacks

Dawn Raid on Sayaya TownSecond Attack in DankawariNorth-West’s Deepening Security Crisis

Residents of Matazu Local Government Area in Katsina State, Nigeria, woke to terror early Sunday as armed assailants launched coordinated attacks, leaving a trail of destruction, injuries, and death. The violence claimed the life of a police officer, injured two civilians, and destroyed critical infrastructure, including a primary healthcare center and multiple shops.

Dawn Raid on Sayaya Town

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers stormed Sayaya town in the early hours, setting fire to a local health clinic and looting nearby businesses before torching them. At least two vehicles were also destroyed in the rampage.

The gunmen later ambushed a police outpost, killing one officer in the exchange. Two wounded residents were rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.

Governor Dikko Radda’s office confirmed the assaults in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed. The governor visited the affected communities, offering condolences to the slain officer’s colleagues and expressing solidarity with traumatized families.

Second Attack in Dankawari

In a separate but related incident, bandits struck Dankawari town within the same local government, burning a vehicle and deepening fears among locals already reeling from relentless violence.

Security agencies had not issued an official statement at the time of reporting, leaving residents frustrated over what many describe as a slow response to escalating threats.

North-West’s Deepening Security Crisis

The latest attacks highlight the worsening insecurity plaguing Katsina State and Nigeria’s North-West region, where armed groups frequently target rural communities, security forces, and public facilities. Despite military operations and government pledges, areas like Matazu, Malumfashi, and Funtua remain hotspots for kidnappings, killings, and arson.

Many villagers have resorted to forming vigilante groups for self-defense, citing inadequate protection from overstretched security forces.

As authorities scramble to contain the violence, displaced families and business owners face an uncertain future amid the region’s unrelenting cycle of bloodshed.
