Cleveland Guardians’ Lane Thomas Sidelined with Wrist Injury, Will Wilson Called Up
The Cleveland Guardians have been dealt a blow as outfielder Lane Thomas was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a bruised right wrist. The injury occurred when Thomas was hit by a pitch during the team’s home opener against the Chicago White Sox on April 8.
The move was made retroactive to April 20, just before the Guardians faced the New York Yankees in the second game of their three-game series. To fill Thomas’ roster spot, the team called up infielder Will Wilson from Triple-A Columbus.
Thomas, 29, has been a key player for Cleveland, particularly during their impressive postseason run last year. Despite struggling for much of the regular season after arriving from the Washington Nationals in a July trade, he became a postseason hero. His standout moment came in Game 5 of the AL Division Series against the Detroit Tigers, where he launched a grand slam off AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, propelling the Guardians to victory.
Since the wrist injury, Thomas has played in just five games, with his last appearance on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team hopes his recovery will be swift, but for now, they must navigate his absence.
Stepping into the spotlight is Will Wilson, a 26-year-old infielder making his long-awaited MLB debut. Wilson has been tearing up Triple-A, batting .324 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in just 18 games. He has been on a hot streak lately, homering in three of his past four games.
Wilson’s journey to the majors has been a winding one. A former first-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels in 2019, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants later that year. The Guardians acquired him in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft this past offseason. Now, he gets his chance to prove himself at the highest level.
In addition to Thomas’ injury, the Guardians transferred right-handed pitcher Trevor Stephan to the 60-day injured list as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Stephan, a reliable arm in Cleveland’s bullpen, will be sorely missed as he works his way back to full health.
The Guardians remain optimistic despite these setbacks. With Wilson’s call-up, the team hopes to maintain its momentum as they push through the season. Fans will be watching closely to see how the roster adjustments impact Cleveland’s quest for another postseason berth.
