South Sudan’s Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba Faces Political Crisis as MPs Convene Emergency Session

South Sudan’s political tension has reached a boiling point as Jemma Nunu Kumba, the Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, summoned an emergency parliamentary session set for April 8. This comes amid a growing push within the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) to remove her from office, marking a critical moment in the nation’s fragile political landscape.

The crisis erupted after the SPLM, chaired by President Salva Kiir, unanimously voted to withdraw confidence in Kumba’s leadership during a caucus meeting on March 31. The party formally recommended her removal to Kiir, who holds significant sway over parliamentary decisions. Parliamentary spokesperson Oliver Mori Benjamin confirmed the summons, emphasizing the urgency and instructing all Members of Parliament and government ministers to attend without exception.

“We are in the operations room in Parliament, even though it’s a holiday,” Benjamin stated. “All MPs and ministers are required to attend this sitting without fail. The agenda will be communicated, but as you know, there have been significant political developments.”

These “developments” refer to allegations of financial misconduct leveled against Kumba by a group of SPLM lawmakers. The accusations include the misuse of funds tied to regional parliamentary games, questionable expenditures on a generator, and mismanagement of operational budgets totaling billions of South Sudanese pounds. Specific claims highlight double payments for catering services, with 300 million South Sudanese pounds allegedly paid twice for services valued at just 50 million South Sudanese pounds.

Kumba’s office has countered these allegations, asserting that she was denied a fair opportunity to address the claims during the SPLM meeting and that the process lacked transparency and adherence to parliamentary procedures. “The Office of the Speaker has taken note of the concerns raised and stands ready to address these matters through appropriate institutional processes,” read a statement from her team.

The emergency session places Kumba in an unprecedented position: presiding over a Parliament that may decide her political fate. The outcome of the meeting could lead to her immediate removal, with potential replacements reportedly already being discussed within the SPLM.

This brewing crisis underscores deeper rifts within the ruling party as South Sudan approaches planned elections in 2026. Analysts suggest the controversy reflects a broader power struggle within the unity government, with factions vying for control ahead of the pivotal vote.

Kumba, who made history in 2021 as South Sudan’s first female Speaker, now faces one of the most formidable challenges of her career. Her leadership, once hailed as a milestone for gender representation, is under intense scrutiny, with her political future hanging in the balance.

The emergency session’s outcome will not only determine the fate of Kumba’s role but could also reshape the dynamics of South Sudan’s Parliament. As the nation watches closely, the unfolding drama highlights the fragile state of governance and accountability in the fledgling democracy.
