Kampala Faces 12-Hour Water Shutdown for Critical Maintenance on April 10

Residents and businesses across Uganda’s capital will experience a full-day water supply disruption on Friday, April 10, 2026, as the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) conducts essential maintenance at the Ggaba 2 treatment plant. The shutdown, scheduled from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., will impact large sections of the city, prompting officials to urge advance preparations.

Why the Shutdown?

The NWSC confirmed the interruption is necessary for routine servicing of critical treatment units and electro-mechanical systems at the Ggaba 2 complex, one of Kampala’s main water supply hubs. The maintenance aims to enhance long-term efficiency and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

“We regret the inconvenience but urge customers to store water in advance,” the NWSC stated in a public notice on Thursday, April 9. “This proactive work ensures more reliable service in the coming months.”

Affected Areas

The outage will span multiple neighborhoods, including:

  • Central Kampala: Central Business District, Kololo, Nakawa, Jinja Road areas, and Banda.
  • Eastern Zones: Kyambogo, Mutungo, and parts of Mbuya.
  • Northern Suburbs: Bwaise, Kawempe, Matugga, Kawanda, and Mulago.
  • Western & Southern Regions: Lubaga, Makerere, Namirembe, Makindye, Nsambya, Muyenga, and Kansanga.

Outlying areas like Bulenga, Nansana, Wakiso, Nateete, and Kyengera Trading Centre will also face disruptions.

Residents Urged to Conserve Water

With no alternative supply during the 12-hour window, the NWSC advises households and businesses to use stored water sparingly. Hospitals, schools, and large commercial entities have been alerted to make contingency plans.

Long-Term Benefits

While the shutdown may cause short-term challenges, the NWSC emphasizes that the upgrades will reduce future unplanned outages. Similar maintenance in 2025 led to a 15% improvement in supply consistency for affected zones.

What’s Next?

The NWSC will monitor progress and provide updates via its official channels. Customers can report emergencies through the NWSC hotline or social media platforms.
