Ohio’s Water Infrastructure Excellence Earns National Recognition from EPA

Ohio’s robust efforts to ensure clean and reliable water systems have earned high praise from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This week, the EPA recognized 48 water infrastructure projects across the state for their “excellence and innovation,” highlighting Ohio as a national leader in safeguarding public health and environmental sustainability.

The accolades center on Ohio’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF), long-standing programs that have been instrumental in upgrading water systems statewide. These initiatives, a partnership between the EPA and the state, provide low-cost financing for critical infrastructure improvements, ensuring communities have access to safe drinking water and efficient wastewater management.

“Ohio’s commitment to protecting public health and ensuring safe, reliable drinking water for its communities is truly exemplary,” said EPA Regional Administrator Anne Vogel. “By leveraging innovative approaches and maximizing the impact of the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, Ohio is setting a high standard for others to follow.”

Record-Breaking Impact
Ohio’s DWSRF has been a standout performer, committing over 100% of available funds for four consecutive years. This aggressive approach has accelerated the delivery of clean water projects across the state. In the 2025 fiscal year alone, Ohio’s Division of Environmental and Financial Assistance signed 146 loans worth $676.9 million—more than double the assistance provided the previous year.

These funds have supported a wide range of initiatives, from upgrading aging pipelines to improving wastewater treatment facilities. The EPA emphasized that Ohio’s programs serve as a model for other states, showcasing how sustained financial investment and innovative management can yield tangible benefits for both the environment and residents.

A National Blueprint for Success
The EPA’s recognition underscores Ohio’s role in advancing the Powering the Great American Comeback Initiative, a federal effort aimed at ensuring clean air, land, and water for all Americans. The CWSRF and DWSRF programs align closely with this initiative, demonstrating the importance of collaborative federalism in addressing environmental challenges.

To date, these revolving fund programs have provided over $265 billion in financial assistance across the U.S., making them a cornerstone of national water infrastructure improvement efforts. Ohio’s success in maximizing these resources has set a benchmark for other states striving to achieve similar results.

Community Impact and Future Goals
The impact of Ohio’s water infrastructure projects extends far beyond statistics. For residents, these initiatives mean safer drinking water, reduced environmental pollution, and enhanced community resilience. Local leaders have praised the programs for their ability to address long-standing infrastructure gaps, particularly in underserved areas.

Looking ahead, Ohio EPA officials remain committed to maintaining momentum. By continuing to prioritize innovation and efficiency, the state aims to further strengthen its water systems while inspiring other regions to follow suit.

As Vogel noted, “This recognition reflects the dedication and collaboration of Ohio EPA and its partners to deliver measurable benefits and resilient water infrastructure statewide.”

Ohio’s achievement serves as a reminder of the critical role that well-funded, innovative programs play in addressing environmental challenges and improving public health. With the EPA’s endorsement, the state’s efforts are now poised to inspire a wave of similar advancements nationwide.
