Zimbabwe Teen Faces Court for Allegedly Stealing $3,000 From School to Buy Car
A 19-year-old high school student in Zimbabwe has been charged with theft after allegedly stealing over $3,000 from his school’s administration office to purchase a luxury car.
Martin Chitembwe, a Form Six student at St. James Zongoro High School in Mutasa, appeared before Mutare Magistrates’ Court this week, where he denied allegations of unlawful entry and theft. Provincial Magistrate Poterai Gwezhira remanded him out of custody, with his trial set for April 26.
Deception and Theft
According to prosecutor Joice Tinarwo, Chitembwe allegedly tricked the school’s deputy head, Marian Masango, into handing over office keys by claiming he had been sent by Reverend Bezel Matikiti. Once inside, he reportedly unlocked both the main office and the clerk’s office, stealing $3,202 from a drawer.
The scheme unraveled after police received a tip-off that the teenager had recently bought a black Toyota Lexus (Registration Number ACN0112). Authorities arrested him, and during questioning, he allegedly confessed to stealing the money to buy the car. Despite this reported admission, Chitembwe pleaded not guilty in court.
Recovery of Stolen Funds
Police have since recovered $2,400 of the stolen money and impounded the vehicle as investigations continue. The case has sparked discussions about financial security in schools and the pressures facing young people in Zimbabwe’s struggling economy.
Chitembwe’s next court appearance on April 26 will determine whether he stands trial for the alleged crimes.
