El Alamein, Egypt – June 21–24, 2026

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has chosen Egypt’s coastal city of El Alamein as the host for its 33rd Annual Meetings (AAM2026), set to take place from June 21 to 24, 2026. The high-profile gathering will bring together African leaders, policymakers, and business executives to discuss strategies for boosting trade and industrialization across the continent.

Under the theme “Intra-African Trade and Industrialization: Pathway to Economic Sovereignty,” the meetings aim to address Africa’s growing need for self-reliance amid global economic instability. With rising geopolitical tensions and protectionist policies reshaping international trade, African nations are increasingly looking inward to strengthen regional supply chains and reduce dependence on raw commodity exports.

A Call for Economic Self-Sufficiency

Dr. George Elombi, President and Chairman of Afreximbank’s Board of Directors, emphasized the urgency of shifting Africa’s economic focus. “For the past decade, Afreximbank has laid the groundwork for intra-African trade to flourish,” he said. “Now, we must prioritize processing goods under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to create sustainable growth.”

Dr. Elombi stressed that Africa must move beyond exporting raw materials and invest in local manufacturing to capture more value. “With global uncertainty rising, we need to build regional value chains, support industrialization, and consume what we produce,” he added.

Egypt’s Role in Advancing African Integration

Egypt, as the host nation, sees the event as an opportunity to reinforce its leadership in regional economic cooperation. H.E. Mr. Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, stated, “Egypt is honored to welcome delegates to this critical forum. Our strategic location and economic strength position us as a key player in driving Africa’s integration and industrialization.”

The choice of El Alamein—a city with historical significance and growing economic potential—reflects Egypt’s commitment to fostering pan-African collaboration. The meetings will provide a platform for high-level discussions on trade finance, logistics, and investment opportunities, with the goal of accelerating bankable projects across the continent.

What to Expect at AAM2026

The four-day event will feature:

  • Strategic dialogues among African heads of state, finance ministers, and private sector leaders.
  • Investment matchmaking to connect businesses with financiers and close deals.
  • Expert insights on trade policies, industrialization, and economic resilience.

Delegates will also explore ways to leverage the AfCFTA, which aims to create the world’s largest free trade area by connecting 1.3 billion people across 55 countries.

Why This Meeting Matters

With global supply chains under strain and economic alliances shifting, African nations are under pressure to strengthen their own markets. The AAM2026 seeks to turn these challenges into opportunities by promoting homegrown industries and reducing reliance on imports.

As Dr. Elombi put it, “Economic sovereignty isn’t just a goal—it’s a necessity for Africa’s future.”
