Newton Falls Business Owner Launches $30,000 Treasure Hunt to Revitalize Local Economy
NEWTON FALLS, Ohio — A local entrepreneur is turning his small town into a real-life treasure map, hoping to attract visitors and breathe new life into struggling businesses.
Tom Colosimo, owner of Fieldview Acres Mercantile, an antiques and curiosities shop, has hidden a chest filled with gold, silver, and cash worth more than $30,000 somewhere in Newton Falls. The hunt, which began in March, will conclude with a final clue in early July—and treasure seekers are already flocking to the town.
A Town Worth Discovering
Nestled in northeastern Ohio, Newton Falls boasts scenic waterfalls, a historic covered bridge, and a charming downtown filled with mom-and-pop shops. But despite its picturesque appeal, Colosimo says the local economy has been struggling.
“In the five years I’ve been here, about 20 businesses have come and gone,” he said. “I wanted to do something to bring people back.”
The idea came from a childhood tradition—hiding small treasures for his daughter to find. What started as a plan to stash $1,000 quickly snowballed when a friend donated a rare $5,500 gold coin. Soon, more than 60 sponsors jumped in, boosting the prize’s total value beyond expectations.
Clues, History, and a Growing Buzz
Clues are being released gradually on the Fieldview Acres Facebook page, with each hint tied to the town’s rich history. Colosimo has even seen a surge in sales for a local history book, which he says is key to solving the puzzle.
“People are buying it like crazy because the clues are rooted in Newton Falls’ past,” he explained.
The treasure hunt has already drawn attention from near and far. Kelly Snow and her sisters made the two-hour trip from their hometown after hearing about the challenge.
“I saw the treasure hunt and thought, ‘No way!’” Snow said. “Now it’s our new destination for ‘Together Tuesday.’”
Even seasoned treasure hunters like Lee Dowdy, known for uncovering Civil War artifacts, have joined the search.
“At first, I thought it was just for kids,” Dowdy admitted. “But when I saw the clues, I realized this was serious. You really have to study them—it’s not easy.”
More Than Just Gold and Silver
While the chest itself is packed with valuables, Colosimo hopes the real prize will be a renewed appreciation for Newton Falls.
“The treasure is just the bait,” he said. “The real reward is discovering everything this town has to offer.”
With the final clue set to drop in July, the excitement is building. Visitors are stopping by local shops, and businesses are seeing a welcome boost.
For Colosimo, the hunt is about more than money—it’s about community.
“This town deserves to thrive,” he said. “And if a little adventure helps, then I’m happy to make it happen.”
