Bluesky Unveils Attie: A Revolutionary AI Assistant to Empower Users in Building Custom Algorithms and Feeds

In a bold move that underscores its commitment to innovation, Bluesky, the decentralized social network known for its pioneering AT Protocol (atproto), has unveiled Attie, an AI-powered assistant designed to democratize digital content curation and app creation. Unveiled at the Atmosphere conference over the weekend, Attie marks a significant departure from Bluesky’s core social network offerings, positioning itself as a standalone tool that empowers users to design custom feeds, curate content, and eventually build their own social apps—all without requiring technical expertise. Developed by Bluesky’s Chief Innovation Officer Jay Graber and CTO Paul Frazee, Attie leverages Anthropic’s Claude AI to deliver a seamless, agentic experience built atop Bluesky’s decentralized framework.

The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for Bluesky, which recently secured $100 million in Series B funding, signaling both stability and ambition for the company’s future. With Attie, Bluesky aims to redefine the role of AI in social networking, shifting the focus from platform-centric algorithms to user-driven customization. “We think AI should serve people, not platforms,” Graber emphasized in her keynote address. “An open protocol puts this power directly in users’ hands.”

A New Frontier in Digital Customization

Attie is not merely an extension of Bluesky’s existing platform but a standalone product that reflects Bluesky’s broader vision for a decentralized digital ecosystem. Users interact with Attie through natural language commands, much like conversing with an AI chatbot. By leveraging their Atmosphere login—a universal credential for apps built on the AT Protocol—users can immediately access personalized insights based on their activity and preferences. This seamless integration underscores Bluesky’s commitment to interoperability and data transparency across its ecosystem.

The app’s core functionality allows users to create custom feeds tailored to their interests, ask questions about trending posts, and even curate content for reposting. “You control it, you shape it, without having to write code or know how to set up these feeds,” explains Bluesky’s interim CEO Toni Schneider. “It’s the beginning of just having a lot more people be able to build on top of the Atmosphere.”

Attie’s capabilities are expected to expand over time, with plans to enable users to “vibe-code” their own social apps—a term coined to describe the intuitive, user-friendly process of app creation facilitated by AI. This ambitious roadmap positions Attie as a gateway for non-technical users to participate in the burgeoning decentralized app economy.

Empowering Users in an AI-Driven World

Graber, who transitioned from CEO to Chief Innovation Officer earlier this year, spearheaded the development of Attie as part of her renewed focus on product innovation. “I think she realized that there was so much more that she wanted to build,” Schneider remarks. “As she spent more time, it became clear that this is her happy place. She’s an amazing leader and visionary, and we want her building more things.”

At its heart, Attie is a response to the growing concerns about the centralized control of AI by major tech platforms. Graber criticized the current landscape, where AI is often wielded to maximize user engagement and data extraction rather than serve individual needs. “We think AI is a very powerful technology, but we want to make sure that we use it to build things that really benefit people,” Schneider adds.

Bluesky’s decentralized ethos aligns with this philosophy, offering users unprecedented control over their digital experiences. By building on the AT Protocol, Attie ensures that users, rather than platforms, dictate the algorithms that shape their online interactions.

Funding and Future Prospects

Bluesky’s recent $100 million funding round, led by undisclosed investors, provides a robust financial foundation for the company’s ambitious plans. Schneider highlights that this infusion guarantees stability and security for Bluesky’s ecosystem, with at least three years of runway to focus on key challenges. These include enhancing privacy controls within the AT Protocol and exploring monetization strategies for its 43.4 million users.

Notably, Schneider reassured users that Bluesky has no plans to integrate cryptocurrency, despite backing from crypto investors. “It’s the kind of investors who were attracted to crypto because of its decentralization,” he explains. “This is decentralized social, so it fits those who are invested to believe in the platform and the ecosystem opportunity.”

Potential monetization avenues under consideration include subscriptions, hosting services for independent communities, and fees for advanced Attie features. Schneider draws parallels between Bluesky’s ecosystem and WordPress, the decentralized publishing platform he previously helmed. “With WordPress, that turned into a huge ecosystem with billions of dollars flowing through it,” he notes. “This is what we’re hoping for, for the Atmosphere to have that similar ability for lots of these apps and services to coexist and build an ecosystem.”

A Vision for Decentralized Collaboration

Bluesky’s introduction of Attie is more than just a product launch; it’s a statement of intent. By empowering users to customize their digital experiences and participate in app development, Bluesky is challenging the status quo of centralized social media. Attie represents a step toward a future where AI and decentralization converge to prioritize user autonomy and creativity.

As Attie enters its private beta phase, Bluesky’s focus will be on refining its capabilities and gathering feedback from Atmosphere conference attendees. The ultimate goal is to create a tool that democratizes technology, making it accessible to anyone with a vision—whether they’re a seasoned developer or a curious newcomer.

In a digital landscape increasingly dominated by monolithic platforms, Bluesky’s Attie offers a refreshing alternative: a decentralized, user-centric approach to AI that puts power back in the hands of the people. Whether it will redefine the future of social networking remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Bluesky is betting big on the promise of open protocols and user-driven innovation.
