Ohio Launches $3.4 Billion Road Construction Season, Setting a Record High

Spring in Ohio isn’t just about blooming flowers and warmer weather—it also marks the start of the state’s busiest road construction season. This year, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is rolling out a historic $3.4 billion investment in infrastructure, aiming to improve safety, preserve existing roads, and boost economic growth.

With 977 new projects underway, drivers across the state will see more orange barrels than ever before. The initiative includes upgrades to over 4,500 miles of roadway—equivalent to driving from Columbus, Ohio, to San Diego, California, and back.

“As a state that makes and moves things, we must have a safe transportation system that is well maintained,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “Our ODOT teams will make enhancements to Ohio’s roadways to better protect everyone traveling on them.”

A Focus on Preservation and Safety

Nearly 80% of this year’s budget will go toward preserving existing bridges and roads, ensuring they remain safe and functional for years to come. Additionally, Ohio is prioritizing roadway safety more than most states, with 174 safety-focused projects planned. These initiatives include upgrades like improved signage, guardrails, and intersection redesigns aimed at reducing accidents.

“This record-setting construction season is a testament to ODOT’s focus on building a more resilient transportation system and saving lives,” said ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn. “It also positions Ohio as the heart of the nation’s supply chain and continues to fuel the state’s economic engine.”

Major Projects Across the State

Of the nearly 1,000 projects, 36 are valued at over $10 million each, highlighting the scale of this year’s efforts. These projects will address critical infrastructure needs, from repaving highways to repairing aging bridges.

Since 2019, ODOT has invested a staggering $15.5 billion in 6,067 projects statewide. This latest investment underscores Ohio’s commitment to maintaining its status as a key hub for transportation and commerce.

What Drivers Need to Know

With construction underway across the state, drivers are encouraged to plan their commutes carefully. ODOT recommends checking OHGO for real-time traffic updates and project details. Residents can also explore the latest initiatives on ODOT’s website.

While orange barrels may lead to temporary delays, the long-term benefits are clear: safer roads, smoother commutes, and a stronger infrastructure network for Ohio’s future.
