Columbus Crew Secures First Season Victory with Stellar Performance Against Atlanta United

ATLANTA — The Columbus Crew clinched their first win of the season in emphatic fashion, defeating Atlanta United 3-1 on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The victory marked a turning point for the Crew under new head coach Henrik Rydström, as midfielder Wessam Abou Ali delivered a breathtaking second-half performance to seal the deal.

Abou Ali, who has quickly become a key player for Columbus, stunned Atlanta with two rapid-fire goals within the first eight minutes of the second half. His first strike came in the 48th minute, courtesy of assists from Max Arfsten and defender Steven Moreira. Just five minutes later, Abou Ali struck again, this time with help from Dylan Chambost and Sean Zawadzki, extending Columbus’ lead to 2-0.

The 24-year-old midfielder’s impressive tally now stands at four goals this season, bringing his total to seven in just 11 league appearances. His knack for finding the net has breathed new life into a Columbus team that had struggled to find its footing early in the season.

Atlanta United, however, refused to go down without a fight. Midfielder Alexey Miranchuk narrowed the gap with an unassisted goal in the 60th minute, his fourth of the season, cutting Columbus’ lead to 2-1. But the Crew responded almost immediately. In the 61st minute, Arfsten slotted home his first goal of the campaign, assisted by Andres Herrera and Moreira, restoring Columbus’ two-goal advantage and silencing the home crowd.

Defender Steven Moreira played a pivotal role in the victory, contributing two assists—his first and second of the season—and bringing his career total to 21 in 135 appearances with the Crew. Herrera, meanwhile, notched his first assist of the year after a standout performance last season with four assists.

Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte made three crucial saves to preserve the lead, while Atlanta’s Lucas Hoyos, making his fifth league start, managed four saves but couldn’t prevent his team from slipping to a disappointing 1-4-1 record.

The win lifted Columbus to a 1-3-2 record, offering much-needed momentum as they look to build on their first victory under Rydström. The Swedish coach, who took the helm this season, has been working to instill a new identity in the team, and Saturday’s performance suggests his efforts are beginning to pay off.

For Atlanta United, the loss adds to a frustrating start to the season. Despite Miranchuk’s individual brilliance, the team has struggled to find consistency, leaving fans eager for a turnaround.

Looking ahead, Atlanta United will aim to bounce back when they visit the Chicago Fire next Saturday. Meanwhile, Columbus Crew will look to build on their newfound momentum as they host Orlando City on April 12 in what promises to be another thrilling matchup.
