Major Cleveland Highway Ramp Closure Sparks Two Months of Traffic Disruptions

Starting Monday, Cleveland commuters will face significant changes as the West 117th Street ramp to Interstate 90 eastbound shuts down for two months. The closure is part of a large-scale rehabilitation project aimed at improving the aging infrastructure of I-90, a critical artery for Northeast Ohio traffic.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has outlined a detour route for drivers: motorists will be directed to take I-90 westbound to West 140th Street and then re-enter I-90 eastbound. While this route is designed to minimize inconvenience, ODOT warns drivers to expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

The ramp closure is just the beginning of a series of traffic adjustments on I-90. Beginning Wednesday, April 15, a bidirectional traffic pattern will be implemented on I-90 eastbound between Wagar Road and West 73rd Street. This configuration, which will remain in place through November 2026, will maintain all lanes of traffic but requires eastbound vehicles exiting between Wagar Road and West 73rd Street to use the right two lanes.

The broader rehabilitation project also includes ongoing lane restrictions and closures across Cuyahoga County. Among the most notable impacts:

  • West 140th Street under I-90 will experience various lane restrictions through fall 2028.
  • Berea Road under I-90 will face similar lane reductions until fall 2028.
  • I-90 eastbound between Hilliard Boulevard and Alger Road will be reduced to three lanes through November 2026.
  • I-90 between West Boulevard and Hilliard Boulevard will have intermittent lane restrictions, ramp closures, and lane shifts through fall 2028.
  • The McKinley Avenue entrance to I-90 eastbound will remain closed until early June.

For residents and commuters, navigating these disruptions will require patience and planning. ODOT encourages drivers to check real-time traffic updates and explore alternative routes to avoid congestion. Additional details on current and upcoming traffic projects in Cuyahoga County are available on ODOT’s official website.

The I-90 rehabilitation project is part of a broader effort by ODOT to address aging infrastructure in Ohio. While the temporary inconveniences are significant, the long-term benefits—including improved road safety and smoother commutes—are expected to outweigh the short-term challenges.

As the construction progresses, officials urge drivers to remain cautious, follow posted detour signs, and allow extra travel time. For Cleveland residents, adapting to these changes will be a daily reality for the foreseeable future.
