Cape Town, South Africa – Archbishop Thabo Makgoba has issued a stark warning against the dangers of online gambling, calling for an outright ban or strict regulations to curb its devastating impact on vulnerable communities.

Speaking to EWN, the Anglican leader highlighted alarming trends, including pensioners squandering SASSA grants, students gambling away financial aid, and young people spiraling into debt and depression.

“This is not just entertainment—it’s a social crisis,” Makgoba said. “Families are being torn apart, and the government must act before more lives are ruined.”

Betting Boom: A 390% Surge

Citing National Treasury data, Makgoba revealed that South Africa’s gambling revenue has skyrocketed by 390% in just five years, fueled by aggressive advertising and easy access to online platforms. He urged stricter ad controls and immediate policy intervention.

Madlanga Commission Exposes Corruption in Tshwane

Meanwhile, the Madlanga Commission resumed hearings, with a new witness set to testify on alleged corruption within the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and its police department.

According to SABC News, the probe has uncovered widespread tender rigging, with senior officials accused of colluding with businesses to siphon millions in public funds. The Tshwane Metro Police Department is under particular scrutiny for its role in the scandal.

Easter Crackdown: Drunk Driving Arrests Up 39%

In a separate development, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reported a 39% spike in drunk driving arrests over Easter weekend.

Spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed 934 motorists were detained, while 1,215 vehicles—many operating illegally—were impounded. Despite the rise in offenses, officials noted a 30% drop in unroadworthy vehicles, signaling some progress in enforcement.

What’s Next?

As calls for gambling reform grow, all eyes remain on the Madlanga Commission for further revelations. Meanwhile, traffic authorities vow to sustain their clampdown on reckless driving.
