Citing National Treasury data, Makgoba revealed that South Africa’s gambling revenue has skyrocketed by 390% in just five years, fueled by aggressive advertising and easy access to online platforms. He urged stricter ad controls and immediate policy intervention.
Madlanga Commission Exposes Corruption in Tshwane
Meanwhile, the Madlanga Commission resumed hearings, with a new witness set to testify on alleged corruption within the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and its police department.
According to SABC News, the probe has uncovered widespread tender rigging, with senior officials accused of colluding with businesses to siphon millions in public funds. The Tshwane Metro Police Department is under particular scrutiny for its role in the scandal.
Easter Crackdown: Drunk Driving Arrests Up 39%
In a separate development, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reported a 39% spike in drunk driving arrests over Easter weekend.
Spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed 934 motorists were detained, while 1,215 vehicles—many operating illegally—were impounded. Despite the rise in offenses, officials noted a 30% drop in unroadworthy vehicles, signaling some progress in enforcement.
