Monrovia, Liberia — April 6, 2026

Liberia has taken a monumental step toward expanding access to higher education with the official launch of Grand Gedeh University (GGU) and the unveiling of its $1 million Education Endowment Fund Drive. The historic event, held at Monrovia City Hall, was marked by a passionate speech from Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, who hailed the move as a “birth of hope” and a cornerstone for national progress.

The newly established university, which evolved from a community college, is poised to serve not only Grand Gedeh County but the entire southeastern region of Liberia—an area long underserved in terms of educational resources. Vice President Koung, represented by Deputy Chief of Staff Macdonald Momo Metzger, emphasized the transformative role GGU will play in addressing systemic challenges such as illiteracy, brain drain, and limited access to tertiary education.

“This government is serious about education, serious about inclusion, and serious about opportunity,” Koung declared, urging the institution to strive for excellence and compete with Liberia’s top universities.

A Fund Focused on the Future

The $1 million endowment fund is designed to tackle both immediate and long-term needs at GGU, including scholarships, faculty training, infrastructure development, and digital learning technologies. The initiative reflects a strategic effort to ensure sustainable funding and equitable access to education in a region that has historically lagged behind.

As a show of personal commitment, Vice President Koung pledged $5,000 to kickstart the fund and announced plans to construct a modern Student Center, underscoring the government’s dedication to fostering world-class educational facilities.

A Regional Beacon of Opportunity

GGU’s establishment is more than just the addition of another university—it symbolizes a renewed promise of opportunity for Liberia’s southeast. University President Eric Z.M. Gbotoe highlighted the critical role higher education plays in national development, particularly in bridging the gap between urban and rural areas.

“Grand Gedeh University stands as a testament to our collective commitment to expanding access to tertiary education,” Gbotoe stated. He emphasized that the endowment fund will serve as a catalyst for institutional growth, enabling the university to attract top-tier faculty and students while investing in cutting-edge infrastructure.

William D. Towah Sr., Chairman of the Board of Trustees, echoed this sentiment, assuring stakeholders that the $1 million initiative will significantly bolster the university’s revenue base and position it as a leader in educational innovation.

A New Chapter for Liberia

The launch of Grand Gedeh University comes at a pivotal moment for Liberia, as the nation seeks to address systemic challenges in its education sector. Vice President Koung’s call to combat “illiteracy, ignorance, and brain drain” resonates deeply in a country where access to quality education remains unevenly distributed.

By focusing on underserved regions, GGU aims to empower local communities, create opportunities for young Liberians, and contribute to the nation’s broader development goals. The university’s emphasis on excellence and inclusivity aligns with the government’s vision of building a more equitable and prosperous society.

A Community Effort

The success of GGU’s endowment fund drive will depend on widespread support from both public and private stakeholders. Vice President Koung urged Liberians at home and abroad to contribute generously, emphasizing that every dollar invested in education is a step toward a brighter future for the nation.

“Let Grand Gedeh University stand as a promise fulfilled and a promise renewed,” Koung said, rallying the nation to unite behind this transformative initiative.

As Liberia charts a new course in its educational landscape, Grand Gedeh University represents not just a milestone but a beacon of hope for generations to come.
