Irene Sondezi: The Heartbeat of Pholosong Hospital Transforming Patient Experiences
Tsakane’s Pholosong Regional Hospital has often been in the spotlight for its challenges, with patients regularly voicing frustrations over long queues, delayed services, and administrative inefficiencies. Yet, amidst these struggles, a beacon of hope shines brightly—Irene Sondezi, a 55-year-old employee whose unwavering dedication and warmth have earned her the title of the hospital’s unofficial “ambassador.”
For the past two decades, Sondezi has been a fixture at Pholosong, starting as a groundswoman tending to the hospital’s gardens and gradually moving through various departments before settling into her current role in the Quality Assurance unit. As a queue marshal, she ensures patients navigate the hospital efficiently, guiding them to the correct departments and verifying appointment details. But her impact extends far beyond her job description.
Walking through the hospital’s corridors, patients and staff are often greeted by the sound of gospel songs harmonized with motivational messages and lighthearted jokes—all courtesy of Sondezi. Her infectious positivity creates an environment where patients feel seen and cared for, a rarity in a facility often criticized for its shortcomings.
Thandi Lubisi, the hospital’s Quality Assurance Manager, praises Sondezi for her willingness to step in wherever she’s needed. “If she notices that no one is managing the queues, she takes the initiative to assist,” Lubisi explains. “Her presence has significantly reduced complaints in patient registration, and supervisors often request that she remain in her current role because of the positive impact she has across the entire facility.”
Sondezi’s commitment to service excellence earned her recognition as one of the inaugural champions of the “I Serve with a Smile” campaign in 2019—an initiative aimed at enhancing patient experiences across Gauteng’s healthcare facilities. Six years later, she remains the reigning champion, a testament to her enduring dedication.
Her journey hasn’t been without personal challenges. Sondezi battled severe illness at one point, which impacted her ability to work, and she also cares for her mother, who lives with dementia. Yet, she credits her resilience to her faith. “I stayed hopeful that one day God would change my life, and indeed He did,” she reflects. “That’s why, before doing anything, I give gratitude for waking up.”
Patients echo the sentiment that Sondezi is the “face of Pholosong.” Barbra Strydom, a regular outpatient for the past four years, describes her as patient-centered and approachable. “Wherever I go, Irene is always available, always helping. She’s a very friendly lady who makes you feel comfortable,” Strydom shares. Another patient, who wished to remain anonymous, added, “She is the real face of Pholosong. Without her, many people would be lost. We thank the hospital for giving us a mother like mam’ Irene.”
In recognition of her exceptional contributions, Pholosong Hospital has honored Sondezi with certificates of appreciation in both 2019 and 2025. Her story serves as a reminder that even in institutions burdened by systemic challenges, individuals like Sondezi can make a profound difference, one smile and one act of kindness at a time.
