Nigerian President Seeks $516 Million Loan for Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway Project

In a move to accelerate infrastructure development, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has formally requested Senate approval for a $516.3 million loan from Deutsche Bank. The funds are earmarked for the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, a 1,000-kilometer project designed to enhance connectivity across the country.

The request was detailed in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read during Thursday’s plenary session. Tinubu emphasized the urgency of the loan, urging lawmakers to expedite its approval to ensure the timely commencement of the critical infrastructure project.

The Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway is poised to become a cornerstone of Nigeria’s transportation network, linking the northwestern state of Sokoto to Badagry in the southwest. The ambitious project aims to boost trade, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic growth in regions along the route.

Senate President Akpabio has referred the loan request to the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts for further scrutiny. The committee is expected to review the proposal and submit its findings within one week, paving the way for a Senate decision.

The loan is part of a broader borrowing plan already approved by the federal government. Critics, however, have raised concerns about Nigeria’s rising debt profile, which has been a contentious issue in recent years. Proponents argue that strategic borrowing for infrastructure is essential to drive economic progress and improve the quality of life for millions of Nigerians.

As the Senate deliberates on the loan request, all eyes are on the potential impact of the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway. If approved, the project could mark a significant step forward in Nigeria’s quest to modernize its transportation infrastructure and unlock new economic opportunities.
