Central Ohio Homeowners May Qualify for Property Tax Relief After Severe Windstorm

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Homeowners in Central Ohio whose properties suffered damage during last week’s powerful windstorm could be eligible for a temporary reduction in their property values, potentially lowering their real estate taxes. The announcement comes from Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano, who urged affected residents to take advantage of the relief program.

On March 13, Franklin County was under a National Weather Service High Wind Warning, with gusts exceeding 60 mph. These fierce winds caused significant destruction to homes and other structures across the region. Stinziano emphasized that the county auditor’s office is ready to assist homeowners who experienced losses.

“The weekend’s severe winds left many Franklin County homeowners grappling with property damage,” Stinziano said. “We want residents to know that relief may be available. If your property was impacted, we encourage you to apply for a temporary reduction in value.”

Under Ohio state law, county auditors have the authority to adjust property values for homes and structures that have been damaged or destroyed. If a substantial reduction in value is approved, homeowners could see lower real estate taxes until the property is repaired or restored. This provision aims to ease the financial burden on residents dealing with unexpected repairs.

In some cases, the auditor’s office may proactively identify damaged properties and notify homeowners of a proposed adjustment. Those who receive such notifications will not need to apply separately, but Stinziano encouraged all affected homeowners to take action if they believe they qualify.

Applications for the temporary reduction can be submitted online or via a printed form. While not mandatory, residents are advised to include supporting documents such as photos of the damage, repair estimates, or insurance claim information to strengthen their case. The process is designed to be straightforward and accessible, ensuring that homeowners can navigate it with minimal hassle.

For Franklin County residents, the Damaged or Destroyed Property form can be accessed online through the county auditor’s website. Additionally, homeowners can call the Franklin County Auditor’s Office at 614-525-HOME (4663) for assistance or further information.

This initiative underscores the county’s commitment to supporting its residents during challenging times. As homeowners grapple with the aftermath of the storm, the temporary reduction in property values offers a tangible way to alleviate some of the financial pressures associated with recovery efforts.

Stinziano reiterated his office’s readiness to help, stating, “Our goal is to ensure that Franklin County homeowners have the resources they need to recover from this devastating event. We’re here to assist every step of the way.”

Residents are encouraged to act promptly to ensure their applications are processed in time for the next tax assessment cycle.
