Cincinnati Reds’ Nick Lodolo Starts Season on Injured List Due to Recurring Blister Issue

The Cincinnati Reds will begin their 2024 campaign without one of their key pitchers, as left-hander Nick Lodolo has been placed on the injured list due to a persistent blister on his left index finger. This setback comes just days before the Reds’ season opener against the Boston Red Sox, impacting their starting rotation plans.

Lodolo, 28, exited his final Cactus League start on Sunday after throwing just 10 pitches when the blister flared up. This marks the third consecutive season he has dealt with blister issues on the same finger. The recurring problem has raised concerns for both Lodolo and the Reds’ management.

“There’s a bit of concern, especially with his breaking ball,” Reds manager Terry Francona said after Tuesday’s exhibition game against the Milwaukee Brewers. “If we push him too soon and this turns into a month-long issue, it’s not worth it. Missing a couple of starts is far better than losing him for a month. We’re taking the cautious route.”

While Lodolo expressed disappointment about starting the season on the sidelines, he remains optimistic about his recovery timeline. “It’s frustrating, but in the long run, this could work in our favor,” he said. “Hopefully, by next week, I’ll be able to throw a simulated game or a rehab start to test things out without the pressure of a real game.”

Lodolo’s absence is a significant blow to the Reds’ pitching staff. Last season, he posted a solid 9-8 record with a 3.33 ERA in 29 appearances, striking out 156 batters in 156 2/3 innings. His injury adds to the team’s challenges as they aim to build on their 83-79 record from 2023, which secured their first playoff berth since 2020.

The Reds are already without another key starter, Hunter Greene, who underwent elbow surgery two weeks ago and is expected to miss up to four months. Greene, a 2024 All-Star, was instrumental last season with a 7-4 record, a 2.76 ERA, and 132 strikeouts in 107 2/3 innings.

With Lodolo and Greene sidelined, the Reds will rely on their depth to navigate the early part of the season. Andrew Abbott has been tapped to start Thursday’s season opener against the Red Sox. Brady Singer and Rhett Lowder will pitch the final two games of the series, while Chase Burns and Brandon Williamson are set to start the first two games against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Reds’ cautious approach with Lodolo highlights their focus on long-term success. Fans will hope the team’s pitching depth can hold up until their top arms return to full strength.
