UN Report Calls for Urgent Action Amid Alarming Atrocities in El Fasher
The United Nations’ Independent International Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) on Sudan has issued a stark report detailing horrific acts perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during their violent takeover of El Fasher in North Darfur, which occurred in late October 2025. This report raises serious alarms about the ongoing human rights violations in the region.
The FFM’s findings indicate that the RSF, currently locked in a power struggle with Sudan’s military, has engaged in a range of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The report notably suggests that the RSF’s actions might even constitute genocide, presenting a compelling case for immediate international intervention. In the words of the report, without swift measures to ensure accountability and protect civilians, the potential for further genocidal violence remains extraordinarily high.
El Fasher has endured an 18-month siege designed to devastate the local population, culminating in what the report describes as “three days of horror.” During this period, RSF forces wreaked havoc in the city, committing numerous acts of violence including killings, forced disappearances, and sexual assaults. The mission uncovered evidence of targeted attacks based on ethnicity, gender, and perceived political affiliations, underscoring a calculated approach to violence aimed at specific communities.
The horror experienced in El Fasher should have been anticipated, as it aligns closely with the RSF’s established pattern of behavior throughout Darfur. This makes it clear that a drastic change in the global response to the RSF’s actions is vital in preventing future atrocities.
The report serves not merely as a document of condemnation but also as a roadmap for protection and accountability, particularly as the conflict is showing signs of spreading into the Kordofan region. In light of these findings, the UN Security Council is urged to quickly endorse measures to deploy a civilian protection mission and to tighten the existing arms embargo, extending it to cover all areas in Sudan, not just Darfur.
Countries around the world are being called upon to vocally oppose the United Arab Emirates’ ongoing military support to the RSF. Additionally, the UN is encouraged to investigate the UAE’s possible complicity in these crimes.
Key recommendations from the report also include implementing targeted sanctions against the RSF and supporting the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its efforts to hold perpetrators accountable. The FFM is preparing confidential files on individual suspects, which could be instrumental in advancing universal jurisdiction cases against those responsible for these atrocities.
As the international community prepares to discuss the findings at a Geneva meeting on February 26, there is urgent need for member states, especially those in the Security Council, to take decisive action. Without substantial measures, the risk remains that far too many more civilians in Sudan will endure the same agonizing experiences highlighted in the report.
The darkest days in El Fasher have highlighted the critical need for a united global front to protect human rights and prevent future tragedies. All eyes will be on the responses formulated in the coming weeks, as the fate of countless innocent lives hangs in the balance.
