Nigerians in the UK Prepare for President Bola Tinubu’s State Visit
Nigerians residing in the United Kingdom are gearing up to welcome President Bola Tinubu during his upcoming state visit, scheduled for March 18-19. This visit marks a significant moment in the relationship between Nigeria and the UK, and it has sparked excitement among the Nigerian community in Britain.
Timileyin Ayenuro, the Convener of Nigerian Youth in the UK, made the announcement during a meeting held in Birmingham. He called on Nigerians to come together and show their support for the president during his historic trip. “We want to ensure that President Tinubu feels the warmth of his people here in the UK,” Ayenuro emphasized, urging a strong turnout for the occasion.
The invitation for the visit came directly from King Charles III and Queen Camilla, marking a momentous diplomatic gesture. Accompanying President Tinubu will be First Lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, who will also partake in various engagements during the two-day visit.
At the Birmingham meeting on March 1, Ayenuro also addressed the importance of staying positive about Nigeria’s growth. He reassured the diaspora community about the Tinubu administration’s commitment to national development, citing various initiatives aimed at improving security and enhancing economic stability. “Sustainable progress takes time,” he remarked, adding that the Nigerian people should continue to support their government.
Ayenuro noted that the administration has introduced several strategic measures to counter security challenges within the country, and there have been positive outcomes so far. “Tinubu has taken decisive actions to address the security situation,” he highlighted, suggesting that these initiatives were already yielding beneficial results in various regions.
Emmanuel Akeredolu, Coordinator of Ondo Collectives UK, echoed Ayenuro’s sentiments. He reflected on the advancements Nigeria has made since its return to democracy in 1999. Akeredolu recently visited Nigeria and praised improvements at airports, particularly the enhanced efficiency of check-in and check-out processes due to the introduction of the e-gate system.
He extended his thanks to Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo for their reforms, which he believes have made a tangible difference in national development.
During the meeting, Folasade Uangbaoje, speaking on behalf of Nigerian women in the UK, expressed her gratitude to the Nigerian High Commission for fostering a positive relationship with the diaspora community. She noted that the High Commission’s efforts have significantly eased access to consular services, which previously required Nigerians to return to Nigeria for assistance.
Uangbaoje also recognized the contributions of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, led by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, praising its proactive approach in addressing issues affecting Nigerians abroad. The commission has been commended for its ongoing commitment to safeguarding the interests and welfare of Nigerian citizens living outside the country.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous call for Nigerians in the UK to come together and warmly receive President Tinubu and the First Lady during their state visit.
