Botswana’s Energy Sector Welcomes Nigerian Leader Akinwole II Omoboriowo to Address Electricity Challenges

GABORONE, BOTSWANA – In a strategic move to bolster its energy sector, Botswana has appointed Nigerian energy expert Akinwole II Omoboriowo as Vice Chairman of the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) Board of Directors. This significant appointment comes at a crucial time as the country grapples with consistent electricity supply issues and aims to expand its renewable energy initiatives.

Omoboriowo, a noted leader in the African energy landscape, boasts over 20 years of experience in power infrastructure and finance. As the Chairman and CEO of GENESIS Energy Group, he has been instrumental in the development of utility-scale generation projects totaling more than 780 megawatts across several countries, including Nigeria, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. His portfolio includes over 4.5 gigawatts in the project development pipeline.

Botswana’s ongoing energy dilemma is underscored by a recent report from the World Bank, which reveals significant fluctuations in electricity generation, particularly from key coal plants like Morupule B. Production levels dropped from 3,328 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2022–2023 to a projected 2,674 GWh for 2024–2025. This decline highlights the urgent need for reliable power generation solutions.

Omoboriowo’s entry into BPC aligns with the corporation’s five-year transformation plan, dubbed Maduo 26, which started in 2022. This strategy emphasizes improving operational efficiency while aiming to establish Botswana as a benchmark for regional energy supply. Under his leadership, the BPC is expected to focus on integrating more renewable energy sources, enhancing grid resilience, and attracting investment for sustainable infrastructure.

“This role represents a remarkable opportunity for me to contribute positively to Botswana’s energy landscape at a time when the nation requires transformational changes,” Omoboriowo stated in a LinkedIn post. He expressed gratitude to President Advocate Duma Boko and Minister of Minerals and Energy, Her Excellency Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, for their confidence in his leadership.

The energy sector in Botswana is undergoing a pivotal shift amidst broader national priorities to diversify energy sources, escalate renewable generation, and improve the stability of the electricity grid. Omoboriowo’s expertise in conventional power infrastructure, renewable energy deployments, and specialized financing for energy investments is expected to drive significant progress in these areas.

As Botswana seeks to become a net exporter of electricity within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), the goals outlined in Omoboriowo’s transformative vision will play a crucial role. Among his responsibilities will be to ensure that infrastructure development leads to tangible operational and commercial outcomes.

Moreover, Omoboriowo’s background reflects a growing trend of African professionals applying their international experience to tackle local challenges. His experience spans investment and project structuring in various countries, further enriching his capacity to contribute to Botswana’s energy policies.

While many regional energy stakeholders watch closely, Omoboriowo’s leadership will be vital in answering key questions about Botswana’s role in the Southern African electricity market. As the country aims to enhance system resilience and secure energy independence, the effectiveness of BPC under his guidance could prove instrumental in achieving Botswana’s long-term industrial ambitions.

With the Maduo 26 strategy set to reach its target horizon in 2026, Omoboriowo’s new position places him at the forefront of essential transformation efforts within Botswana’s energy landscape. His commitment to delivery, combined with a dedication to meaningful contributions, promises a new chapter for the country’s energy sector.
