Great Lakes Mall in Ohio Set for Sale as Owner Washington Prime Group Offloads Portfolio
Mentor officials vow to support the mall’s future amid major retail property shake-up
LAKE COUNTY, Ohio — The Great Lakes Mall, a key retail hub in northeast Ohio, is poised for sale as its owner, Washington Prime Group (WPG), prepares to offload its entire portfolio of over 70 properties.
Mentor city officials confirmed the pending sale in a public statement but noted no timeline or buyer has been announced. The city emphasized its commitment to maintaining the mall’s role as a vital economic and community asset.
“We believe in the Great Lakes Mall’s long-term viability,” the city said. “We’ll continue supporting efforts to attract investment and diversify its use for residents and visitors alike.”
Spanning 1.25 million square feet, the mall draws roughly 5.2 million annual visitors, with guests averaging 65 minutes per trip, according to WPG data. The property remains one of the few large-scale retail centers in the region.
Strategic Downsizing Amid Industry Shifts
WPG, which currently lists 50 properties on its website, has been steadily selling off assets over the past year. A company spokesperson said the move is part of a broader restructuring effort, including workforce reductions and organizational downsizing.
Affected employees will receive severance packages, career transition support, and access to a professional development program launched last summer. The initiative offers resume workshops, job search assistance, and skills training to help staff transition to new roles.
Uncertainty and Local Impact
While the sale process remains unclear, Mentor officials hinted at potential redevelopment plans for the mall and surrounding area. The city’s statement stressed a focus on keeping the property economically vibrant amid retail industry challenges.
Great Lakes Mall’s future will hinge on buyer interest and potential rezoning or mixed-use proposals. Local leaders hope to avoid the fate of other struggling malls by attracting new investment.
Washington Prime Group has not disclosed further details on the sale timeline or prospective buyers.
