Max Meyer Dominates as Miami Marlins Defeat Cincinnati Reds 6-3

MIAMI — In a standout performance Monday night, Max Meyer delivered a career-best game, striking out 14 batters over six scoreless innings to lead the Miami Marlins to a 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The win marked Miami’s second consecutive triumph after a tough five-game losing streak.

Meyer, 25, was unstoppable on the mound, tying for the third-most strikeouts in Marlins franchise history. His previous personal high was eight strikeouts, and his stellar outing lowered his ERA to an impressive 2.10. The young pitcher left the field in the sixth inning to a standing ovation from the Miami crowd, capping off his first double-digit strikeout game since June 1, 2023.

“It’s a great feeling to see the team rally behind you like that,” Meyer said after the game. “I just tried to stay focused and trust my stuff. It paid off tonight.”

The Marlins’ offense came alive in the seventh inning when pinch-hitter Kyle Stowers launched a three-run homer, breaking open the game and securing Miami’s lead. The Reds struggled to recover, despite Eric Wagaman’s 407-foot solo home run in the fifth and Gavin Lux’s two-run shot in the eighth.

Cincinnati’s pitcher Nick Lodolo (2-2) had a decent outing but couldn’t contain Miami’s bats. He allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, Jesús Tinoco sealed the deal for the Marlins, retiring three straight batters in the ninth inning for his second save of the season.

The game also saw several notable firsts. Marlins’ Agustín Ramírez and Ronny Simon recorded their first major league hits in the second inning, with Ramírez later scoring on Simon’s single. Ramírez didn’t stop there, stealing third base later in the game for his first career stolen base.

Meyer’s performance was historic, matching Marlins legends Ricky Nolasco and Liván Hernández in the franchise record books. Nolasco struck out 16 batters in a 2009 game against Atlanta, while Hernández recorded 15 strikeouts during the 1997 NL Championship Series.

Looking ahead, the Marlins will aim to continue their momentum as they face the Reds again on Tuesday. Miami’s Edward Cabrera (0-1, 6.52 ERA) is slated to make his third start of the season, opposing Cincinnati’s Nick Martinez (0-3, 6.00 ERA).

The Marlins’ recent resurgence has injected optimism into their season, and Meyer’s dominant outing Monday night has solidified his role as a key player in the team’s rotation. Fans will be eager to see if Miami can maintain its newfound rhythm in the upcoming games.
