New Eco-Discovery Center Opens at Ohio’s Salt Fork State Park on Earth Day
LOREL CITY, Ohio — Nature enthusiasts and families have a new destination to explore in Ohio’s largest state park. On Tuesday, April 22, coinciding with Earth Day, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) unveiled the Eco-Discovery Center at Salt Fork State Park. This innovative facility aims to educate visitors about environmental stewardship through interactive exhibits and sustainable design.
The 3,332-square-foot center is a hub for immersive learning, featuring terrariums, aquariums, and hands-on displays that highlight the delicate balance between humans and nature. One of the center’s unique attractions is a quirky guide: Bigfoot, the legendary creature said to roam the park’s forests. Through interactive storytelling, Bigfoot teaches visitors how to reduce their environmental footprint while exploring the ecosystems of Salt Fork.
“This center is more than just a building—it’s a gateway to understanding our natural world,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “By blending education with sustainability, we hope to inspire visitors to protect Ohio’s precious resources.”
The Eco-Discovery Center itself is a model of eco-friendly design. It incorporates high-efficiency HVAC systems, LED lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and a water bottle refilling station. Outside, a green roof and wall help absorb rainwater and improve air quality. Additional sustainable features include solar panels, permeable pathways, and a rainwater harvesting system. The surrounding area boasts a patio with seating, a rain garden, a meadow, native trees, and a trail leading to nearby habitats.
Funded through a $4.9 million project, the center received substantial support from a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant of $2,250,500, along with contributions from KeyBank.
Located in Lore City, Salt Fork State Park spans over 17,000 acres and is renowned for its diverse wildlife, hiking trails, and scenic views. The Eco-Discovery Center adds a modern, educational dimension to the park, appealing to visitors of all ages.
Whether you’re a local resident or a traveler passing through, the Eco-Discovery Center offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature while learning how to live more sustainably.
