Liberia Launches National Students’ Symposium to Empower Youth and Shape the Future

April 16, 2024 | Monrovia, Liberia

The Liberia National Students’ Union (LINSU), in partnership with the Ministry of Education, has officially inaugurated the 2026 National Students’ Symposium (NSS). The event, which kicked off on Thursday, April 16, at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, just outside Monrovia, aims to inspire and equip Liberia’s youth to lead the nation toward a brighter future.

Under the theme “Connecting, Inspiring, and Equipping Students to Lead Liberia’s Future,” the symposium gathered more than 200 students from all 15 counties of Liberia. The event also attracted government officials, educational stakeholders, development partners, and student leaders, all united in their commitment to fostering student empowerment and national transformation.

Keynote Address Encourages Discipline and Integrity

Helen S. Momoh, CEO of Suma Technologies, delivered the keynote address, urging students to blend ambition with discipline, integrity, and consistent effort. Her speech resonated deeply with attendees, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in achieving success. Momoh’s message underscored the critical role young people play in shaping Liberia’s future, urging them to seize opportunities and embrace leadership with purpose.

Minister of Education Highlights Student Responsibility

Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, Liberia’s Minister of Education, delivered a special statement during the opening ceremony, highlighting the symposium’s significance as a platform for leadership development, civic engagement, entrepreneurship, and innovation. She emphasized that the Ministry of Education is committed to sustaining its collaboration with LINSU on initiatives that empower students and drive national progress.

“Being heard comes with responsibility,” Dr. Jallah reminded attendees. She urged students to think critically, engage seriously, and contribute ideas that can influence real-world decisions. Her remarks underscored the symposium’s broader goal of fostering a generation of informed, proactive, and solution-oriented leaders.

A New Chapter for Liberia’s Student Movement

H.E. James Tactician Gbelee Washington, President of the Liberia National Students’ Union, delivered a powerful speech during the opening ceremony. He declared that the symposium marks a turning point for Liberia’s student movement, heralding a new era of disciplined thought, strategic action, and constructive purpose.

“We are not gathered here today merely to open a symposium. We are gathered to open possibilities. We are gathered to awaken capacities,” Washington stated. He emphasized that this generation of students is poised to shape Liberia’s destiny, calling them “the hands history has chosen, the minds this nation needs, and the movement this moment requires.”

Activities Designed to Inspire and Equip

The symposium’s agenda includes a series of sessions focused on leadership development, innovation, and civic participation. These activities are designed to inspire participants and equip them with the tools necessary to make a meaningful impact on their communities and the nation at large.

LINSU and the Ministry of Education extended their gratitude to all delegates, partners, institutions, and supporters whose participation contributed to the success of the event’s opening.

Looking Ahead

The National Students’ Symposium represents a pivotal moment in Liberia’s educational landscape, signaling a renewed focus on youth empowerment and leadership development. By connecting, inspiring, and equipping students, the event aims to cultivate a generation of leaders capable of driving Liberia toward a prosperous and sustainable future.

As the symposium continues, participants are encouraged to engage fully, collaborate effectively, and leverage the insights gained to contribute meaningfully to Liberia’s development.
