Pope Leo XIV Condemns Warring “Tyrants” During Africa Tour, Sparks Tensions with U.S. Leadership

Pope Leo XIV has issued a scathing rebuke against those who wage war “in the name of God,” labeling them as “tyrants” who exploit religion for personal and political gain. The pontiff’s fiery remarks, delivered during his ongoing tour of Africa, have drawn sharp criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, escalating tensions between the Vatican and Washington.

During a high-profile address at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral in Bamenda, Cameroon, on Thursday, Pope Leo condemned the destruction of global resources and the perpetuation of violence. Surrounded by cheering crowds, he called out a “handful of tyrants” who he accused of spending billions to destabilize communities through exploitation and conflict.

“Blessed are the peacemakers,” the Pope declared. “But woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic, and political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth.”

The Pope’s comments come amid escalating violence in Cameroon, where government forces have clashed with English-speaking separatists for nearly a decade. Cameroon’s turmoil traces back to its colonial history, as it was divided between French and British rule after World War I. Despite rich reserves of oil, natural gas, and minerals, the nation remains deeply divided, with Anglophone regions protesting decades of political and economic marginalization.

Archbishop Andrew Nkea Fuanya of Bamenda highlighted the region’s suffering during the Pope’s visit, stating, “Today your feet are standing on the soil of Bamenda that has drunk the blood of many of our children.” Since 2016, over 6,000 civilians have been killed, and more than 600,000 displaced, with kidnapping and extortion rampant across the conflict zones.

Pope Leo’s condemnation of war has particularly irked U.S. President Donald Trump, who has publicly criticized the pontiff’s stance on global conflicts, especially those involving Iran. The Pentagon’s recent framing of operations in Iran as a “holy war” has further fueled tensions, with the Pope’s remarks seen as a direct challenge to U.S. policy.

The Vatican leader’s Africa tour has also emphasized interfaith dialogue, with a peace meeting attended by a Mankon tribal chief, a Presbyterian moderator, a Muslim imam, and a Catholic nun. “The world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants,” the Pope acknowledged, “yet it is held together by a multitude of supportive brothers and sisters.”

As Pope Leo continues his African tour, his message resonates beyond the continent, urging global leaders to prioritize peace over profit and exploitation. His unflinching stance against senseless violence has positioned him as a voice of moral authority in a world increasingly divided by war and greed.
