Sudanese Writer’s Deportation from Egypt Sparks Outcry Among Human Rights Groups

Cairo, Egypt — Thirteen Sudanese and Egyptian human rights organizations have strongly condemned the forced deportation of Sudanese writer Idris Babiker from Egypt, raising alarms over the “harsh and inhumane” conditions he reportedly endured during his detention. The groups are calling for an immediate investigation into the matter.

Babiker, who holds asylum documents issued by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), was detained for approximately 50 days before being forcibly deported to Sudan. In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the organizations highlighted the writer’s harrowing experiences, which included deliberate starvation, financial extortion, and being forced to pay for his own accommodation while in detention.

According to Babiker’s testimonies, his health deteriorated significantly due to the appalling conditions of his confinement. He described being held in an environment infested with insects, including lice and cockroaches, with no access to basic hygiene or healthcare.

The writer also reported violent altercations with other inmates and systematic ill-treatment. Despite these abuses, Babiker said he received no protection from authorities, relying instead on fellow detainees for support.

The organizations emphasized that if these allegations are proven, they would represent severe breaches of international refugee protection laws, including prohibitions against arbitrary detention and guarantees of humane treatment.

The incident has drawn attention to the worsening plight of Sudanese refugees in Egypt, particularly since the outbreak of civil war in Sudan in April 2023. Earlier this year, legal experts warned of a renewed crackdown on Sudanese nationals in Egypt, including mass deportations and detentions.

Recent reports have painted a grim picture of the situation. Last month, Radio Dabanga revealed that at least six Sudanese detainees died in Egyptian custody within a span of six weeks.

As the international community watches closely, the deportation of Idris Babiker raises critical questions about Egypt’s adherence to its obligations under international law. The human rights groups behind the statement are urging Egyptian authorities to investigate the allegations promptly and ensure accountability.

The case of Babiker underscores the broader challenges faced by Sudanese refugees seeking safety across borders. With thousands displaced by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the treatment of asylum seekers in neighboring countries like Egypt remains a pressing humanitarian concern.
