Tampa Bay Rays Edge Cleveland Guardians 3-2 in Late-Inning Thriller
CLEVELAND — The Tampa Bay Rays extended their winning streak to five games Monday night with a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, thanks to a clutch performance from Ryan Vilade.
The game turned in the eighth inning when Jonathan Aranda blasted a solo homer off Guardians reliever Hunter Gaddis (0-1) to tie the game. Junior Caminero followed with a single, and pinch-runner Richie Palacios stole second before Vilade delivered the go-ahead RBI single up the middle.
Vilade, who has been on a hot streak, also drove in a run in the sixth inning, finishing the night with three hits. After starting the season hitless in his first six at-bats, he has gone 11-for-20 in his last 10 games.
Guardians’ Early Lead Fades
Cleveland took an early 2-0 lead in the fifth inning when Daniel Schneemann crushed a two-run homer off Rays starter Steven Matz (4-1). The Guardians’ rookie pitcher Parker Messick dominated early, striking out nine batters in 5 2/3 innings while allowing just two hits.
But Tampa Bay chipped away. In the sixth, Yandy Díaz walked, advanced on a grounder, and scored on Vilade’s single. Then, in the eighth, Aranda’s homer set the stage for Vilade’s heroics.
The Guardians threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with one out, but Rays reliever Bryan Baker struck out pinch-hitter George Valera and Schneemann to escape the jam.
What’s Next?
The Rays will look to continue their momentum Tuesday night, sending right-hander Nick Martinez (1-1, 2.10 ERA) to the mound. The Guardians will counter with rookie Tanner Bibee (0-3, 4.45 ERA), hoping to snap their three-game skid.
