Fragile Iran-US Ceasefire Faces Complex Challenges Amid Nuclear NegotiationsA Delicate Diplomatic BreakthroughKey Sticking Points: Nuclear Restrictions and Economic LeveragePotential Spoilers Loom LargeGlobal Implications and the Road Ahead

LONDON—The recent ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran has been met with cautious optimism, but experts warn that the deal remains precarious, with numerous unresolved issues that could derail progress. The breakthrough follows months of indirect negotiations, yet geopolitical tensions, economic pressures, and regional “spoilers” threaten to undermine the fragile truce. Analysts caution that while the initial reactions have been positive, the path to lasting stability is fraught with complications—particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear program and its control over critical trade routes like the Strait of Hormuz.

A Delicate Diplomatic Breakthrough

The tentative agreement marks a significant shift in US-Iran relations, which have been strained since the Trump administration withdrew from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The Biden administration has sought to revive diplomacy, but the road to de-escalation has been riddled with setbacks, including Iran’s continued uranium enrichment and attacks on shipping vessels in the Persian Gulf.

Natasha Hall, an associate fellow at Chatham House, noted that while both sides have signaled willingness to compromise, the ceasefire remains vulnerable. “The announcements have been met with relief, but the real test lies in implementation,” Hall told Bloomberg. “There are still complex details to resolve, particularly around Iran’s nuclear restrictions and its economic leverage in the region.”

Key Sticking Points: Nuclear Restrictions and Economic Leverage

One of the most contentious issues is Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran has steadily increased its uranium enrichment to near-weapons-grade levels, raising alarms among Western powers. Any long-term agreement will require Iran to scale back its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief—a balancing act that has proven difficult in past negotiations.

Equally critical is Iran’s economic influence, particularly its control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime chokepoint through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil passes. Recent years have seen Iran seize commercial ships and harass foreign vessels, using the strait as both an economic lifeline and a geopolitical weapon. If sanctions are lifted, Iran’s strengthened financial position could embolden its regional proxies, further complicating stability in the Middle East.

Potential Spoilers Loom Large

Beyond the immediate US-Iran dynamics, external actors could disrupt the ceasefire. Hardline factions in Tehran, opposed to any concessions to Washington, may seek to sabotage negotiations. Meanwhile, Israel and Gulf states—particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE—remain deeply skeptical of Iran’s intentions and could lobby against the deal.

Hall emphasized that “spoilers exist on all sides—whether political hardliners in Iran, regional rivals, or domestic opposition in the US. Any one of these could unravel progress if not carefully managed.”

Global Implications and the Road Ahead

A successful agreement could ease global energy markets, reducing oil price volatility linked to Middle Eastern tensions. However, failure risks renewed confrontation, with potential military clashes or further nuclear escalation.

For now, diplomats are treading carefully, aware that even small missteps could reignite hostilities. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether this ceasefire evolves into a lasting détente—or collapses under the weight of unresolved disputes.

As Hall put it: “Optimism is warranted, but so is caution. The real work begins now.”
