Uganda’s iKON Awards Sees Record Global Film Submissions for 2024 Edition
Kampala, Uganda — The iKON Awards, Uganda’s premier film recognition event, has wrapped up submissions for its fourth edition with an unprecedented surge in international entries. A total of 300 films from across Africa and beyond will compete for honors, signaling the growing influence of the awards in the global film industry.
This year’s submissions span 26 countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, and Senegal, as well as non-African entries from Brazil, France, India, and the United States. The dramatic rise in global participation aligns with the 2024 theme, “Beyond Borders,” which emphasizes cross-cultural collaboration in filmmaking.
A Platform for Pan-African and Global Talent
Since its inception, the iKON Awards has evolved from a Ugandan-focused event into a major platform for African and international filmmakers. The organizing committee reports that nearly half of this year’s submissions come from outside Uganda, reflecting the awards’ expanding reach.
“The diversity of films we’ve received is extraordinary,” said a spokesperson for the iKON team. “From gripping dramas to innovative documentaries, the entries showcase the richness of global storytelling—especially from Africa.”
iKON Activate: Building Bridges in Filmmaking
Beyond the awards, the iKON Activate initiative has been instrumental in fostering partnerships across the continent. Workshops and networking events have already taken place in Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, with plans to expand to South Africa and the UK.
One notable outcome of these efforts is a new Uganda-Kenya co-production under the O3plus project, backed by Reach A Hand Uganda, Imara TV, and UNESCO. Additionally, veteran Ugandan actor Michael Wawuyo Sr. has signed on to star in the upcoming Nigerian drama Dambe, a collaboration facilitated by iKON.
The Road to Awards Night
The 4th iKON Awards ceremony is set for August 15 at Kampala’s Serena Hotel, where filmmakers, actors, and industry leaders will gather for a night of celebration. Pre-event activations will continue to spotlight skill development and regional partnerships ahead of the main event.
With its growing reputation, the iKON Awards is fast becoming a key date on the international film calendar—bridging gaps between African cinema and the global stage.
