Ohio University Art Professor John Sabraw Honored as COSI STEAM Star for Environmental Advocacy

John Sabraw, a celebrated artist and professor at Ohio University, has been named one of this year’s COSI STEAM Stars, a prestigious recognition that highlights individuals who excel in blending Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics to address pressing global challenges. Known for his innovative approach to art and environmental activism, Sabraw’s work has captivated audiences and sparked conversations about sustainability and ecological preservation.

Sabraw’s journey as an environmentalist and artist is as unique as it is impactful. For years, he has used his creative talents to draw attention to the devastating effects of pollution, particularly from abandoned coal mines in Ohio. These sites, often overlooked, release toxic chemicals into waterways, contaminating ecosystems and posing serious health risks. Sabraw saw an opportunity to turn this environmental crisis into a source of inspiration—and ultimately, action.

One of his most groundbreaking projects involves transforming toxic runoff into vibrant, eco-friendly paints. By collaborating with scientists and engineers, Sabraw developed a process to extract iron oxide from polluted water, which he then uses to create stunning pigments for his artwork. His paintings, rich in color and meaning, serve as both a call to action and a testament to the potential of human ingenuity.

“Art has the power to communicate complex issues in a way that resonates deeply with people,” Sabraw explained in a recent interview. “Through my work, I hope to inspire others to think about our relationship with the environment and the steps we can take to protect it.”

The COSI STEAM Stars program, hosted by the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio, celebrates individuals who bridge disciplines to solve real-world problems. This year, Sabraw was selected for his interdisciplinary approach and his ability to merge art with science to create meaningful change.

“John Sabraw exemplifies what it means to be a STEAM innovator,” said Dr. Frederic Bertley, President and CEO of COSI. “His work not only raises awareness about environmental issues but also offers practical solutions. He is a true inspiration to students, educators, and communities everywhere.”

Sabraw’s recognition comes at a time when environmental concerns are increasingly at the forefront of public discourse. From climate change to pollution, the world faces unprecedented challenges that require creative and collaborative solutions. Sabraw’s work serves as a reminder that art and science, when combined, can be powerful tools for advocacy and change.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Sabraw is a dedicated educator, teaching students the value of interdisciplinary thinking and environmental stewardship. His classes often emphasize the importance of addressing global issues through innovation and collaboration, inspiring the next generation of leaders and changemakers.

“I believe education is key to creating a more sustainable future,” Sabraw said. “By empowering students with the knowledge and skills to tackle complex problems, we can drive positive change on a global scale.”

As a COSI STEAM Star, Sabraw will participate in a series of events aimed at promoting STEAM education and inspiring others to pursue careers in these fields. His story, marked by creativity, resilience, and a deep commitment to the planet, serves as a beacon of hope in an increasingly uncertain world.

For Sabraw, the recognition is not just a personal achievement but a platform to amplify his message. “This honor is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of addressing environmental issues head-on,” he said. “Together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future.”

John Sabraw’s journey is a powerful reminder that art and science are not separate entities but interconnected forces that can drive meaningful change. His work continues to inspire and challenge us to rethink our relationship with the environment—and to take action to protect it for generations to come.
