South African Rugby Star Asenathi Ntlabakanye Banned for 18 Months Over Doping Violation

South African rugby prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye has been handed an 18-month suspension after testing positive for banned substances, effectively ruling him out of the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The suspension, imposed by an Independent Doping Tribunal Panel, follows a months-long investigation into the presence of Anastrozole and self-declared use of Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in his system.

The ban, effective from May 13, 2026, will extend until November 13, 2027, unless appealed. The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sports (Saids), World Rugby, or the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) have 21 days to challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Ntlabakanye, a towering figure in the Springboks lineup, has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. He claimed the substances were prescribed by an endocrinologist and that he sought additional medical advice to confirm their safety. However, under the strict regulations of anti-doping laws, the tribunal found him guilty, citing the presence of prohibited substances as a clear violation.

The suspension deals a significant blow to Ntlabakanye’s career and finances. Over the next 18 months, he stands to lose an estimated R5 million in earnings from the Springboks alone. The ban also sidelines him from one of rugby’s most prestigious events, the 2027 World Cup, effectively disrupting his trajectory in the sport.

The case highlights the complexities and controversies surrounding doping regulations in professional athletics. While Ntlabakanye insists he acted in good faith, the tribunal’s decision underscores the zero-tolerance approach adopted by global anti-doping authorities.

As the clock ticks on the 21-day appeal window, the rugby world waits to see if Saids, Wada, or World Rugby will push for a stricter penalty or uphold the current ruling. An appeal could prolong the legal battle, further complicating Ntlabakanye’s path to redemption.

For now, the Springboks will have to navigate without one of their key players, and Ntlabakanye faces a challenging road ahead as he works to rebuild his reputation and career.
