Donovan Mitchell Leads Cavaliers to Dominant Game 1 Win Over Heat in NBA Playoffs

CLEVELAND — Donovan Mitchell silenced any concerns about his health with a stellar performance Sunday night, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a commanding 121-100 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

Mitchell, who had been nursing a left ankle injury, delivered 30 points, four steals, and set the tone early for the Cavaliers. His aggressive play helped Cleveland secure its highest playoff scoring output since 2018.

Mitchell Matches Michael Jordan’s Playoff Record

The All-Star guard extended an impressive streak, scoring at least 30 points in his seventh consecutive Game 1—tying Michael Jordan’s record. Jordan achieved the feat twice in his legendary career.

“Just setting the tone,” Mitchell said. “I have to be aggressive and see how the defense reacts.”

Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson praised Mitchell’s versatility. “He can get in the lane, finish, and he’s a great shooter. Whatever we ask him to do, he’ll do it—even the dirty work.”

Garland and Jerome Provide Key Support

Darius Garland added 27 points, while Ty Jerome exploded for a career-high 28 points in his playoff debut—16 of which came in the fourth quarter. Jerome’s hot hand helped Cleveland pull away after Miami trimmed the deficit to eight points late in the game.

“Ty turned the game for us,” Atkinson said. “He did it all tonight.”

The Cavaliers shot 18-of-43 from three-point range, with Garland and Jerome each sinking five. Their offensive firepower proved too much for a Heat squad that struggled to contain Cleveland’s pace.

Heat Fall Short Despite Adebayo, Herro Efforts

Miami, the first No. 10 seed to advance via the Play-In Tournament, got strong performances from Bam Adebayo (24 points) and Tyler Herro (21 points). But defensive lapses and Cleveland’s physicality proved costly.

“They were a lot more physical than us, and that set the tone,” Herro admitted. “We’ve got to clean that up.”

After a tight first quarter, the Cavaliers seized control with a 9-2 run and never looked back. Miami briefly threatened in the fourth, cutting the lead to 98-90, but Jerome’s 10-point outburst sealed the game.

What’s Next?

Game 2 tips off Wednesday night in Cleveland, where the Cavaliers will look to extend their series lead. If Mitchell and company maintain this level of play, Miami faces an uphill battle.

For now, Cleveland’s statement win sends a clear message: They’re ready for the playoff spotlight.
